A note from Patti Ries, Mill City Commons
Program Coordinator
Did You Know?
Programs in the arts promote community engagement and contribute to healthy aging. According to the National Center for Creative Aging, "creative engagement contributes to a sense of meaning and purpose in the lives of older adults." Author and researcher, Dr. Gene Cohen, correlates creativity with an increased sense of mastery, self-control, empowerment, and social engagement. Positive emotions related to creativity are believed to boost immune function, while challenging creative activities are found to provide mental stimulation and to enhance brain reserve. Click here to read Cohen's 2006 article, "Research on Creativity and Aging: The Positive Impact of the Arts on Health and Illness."
