Come celebrate summer with neighbors and friends at The Lowry later this afternoon. Members from the Loring/Kenwood neighborhood are hosting. You'll find details, directions and parking information below. In addition, you'll find highlights for the upcoming two weeks of MCC programming and the entire August calendar with details as a link under MCC Upcoming Events. I encourage you to invite a neighbor to events open to guests. We're more than halfway to our goal of 300 members and would love to welcome one of your neighbors (or you if you haven't yet joined!) as our newest member.

Schedule time with Tech Support Guru Richard Martin and/or MCC Executive Director Linnea Tweed. Richard will answer your nagging technology questions during our complimentary helpdesk. Richard knows MAC, Windows, and Linux and can deal with whatever issues you may have in your digital life. Linnea will walk you through the Mill City Commons members only website. After you register, Linnea will confirm the time of your 20-30 minute one-to-one session(s) with Richard and/or her.

World View: Yi Kai's Green Card Story

Artist Y i Kai was born in Changsha, China. He was drafted at age 15 into the Red Army during the Cultural Revolution and eventually began painting posters and making woodcuts for the army. The aftermath of the Tiananmen Square protests led Kai to the U.S. The cultural dichotomy between his native China and the U.S. inspired some of his most interesting works.

Guthrie Theater: Level 1 Costume Design Basics
Saturdays, September 8 - 29, 2012, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Level 8 Learning Center.
Learn how Costume Designers begin with a concept and create costumes for the stage through this hands-on course. Students will conceive their own sample design for the Guthrie's upcoming production of Tales from Hollywood. No experience necessary! Supplies, tools, and tickets to Tales from Hollywood will be provided.

Did You Know?
Cognitive wellness is an important part of the aging journey. A 2011 article from the Lancet Neurology Journal suggests that reduction in modifiable risk factors may provide a protective effect against Alzheimer's disease. These risk factors include diabetes, midlife hypertension, midlife obesity, smoking, depression, cognitive inactivity or low educational attainment, and physical inactivity.
