Executive Director Update
There is still time to sign up for the tour tomorrow of The American Museum of Asmat Art at the University of St. Thomas. The Museum has just moved to a new permanent gallery in the Anderson Student Union and has its grand opening in February. I spoke to our tour guide and director of the museum today. Dr. Julie Risser told me that MCC Member Bill Joyce was involved in the early development of the museum before it was even located at the university. She says, "Bill's enthusiasm was really important for keeping this going." Years ago, Bill traveled to Asmat, a three to four day excursion, and came away impressed with the people, and what we could learn from their culture. To learn more and register, please see below. -- Linnea |

American Museum of Asmat Art Wednesday, January 25, 1:30 - 2:30 pm; University of St. Thomas Anderson
Student Center, 2115 Summit Avenue, St. Paul.
The University of St. Thomas houses one of the top three collections of Asmat art in the country. This new gallery's areas of strength include shields and drums as well as large 14 - 16 foot tall ancestor or bisj poles, a spirit canoe, and decorated canoe. In areas of Asmat, located in Papua, Indonesia, carvers create large bisj poles from mangrove trees. The poles feature revered ancestors and when designed are upended so that the base of the tree becomes the top of the sculpture. As animists, the Asmat believe that spirits embody elements of the physical world. If you need a ride or would like to car pool, contact Linnea.

News From Members
MCC Member and author Margaret Wurtele invites members to a reading from her debut novel The Golden Hour, 7pm February 8 at the Loft Literary Center, 1011 Washington Avenue South. Here are a couple of reviews from the Amazon Vine:
"It is heartbreaking in places, it is romance so tender, it is terror, adventure, history as it could have really happened. I cannot recommend this book enough. It was a joy to read. Margaret Wurtele has written a wonderful first novel. Keep them coming you have me as a future reader." "It is a compelling and suspenseful novel with a lot of historical detail. The author effectively deals with the complex emotions of courage, love and hope during a time in history which was horrifying, brutal and devastating. I found it to be a great read and would highly recommend this novel for a book club!" For more information, about The Loft event, please click here.
