Executive Director Update

MCC Board Chair Marcia Townley and I attended the National Village Gathering in Oakland, CA two weeks ago. The theme was "Bridging the Gap: From Start up to Sustainability." Meeting leadership from other Villages across the country (and the UK and Japan) reinforced that Mill City Commons is ahead of the Village movement curve thanks to our Founders, Board of Directors and Members.

Several speakers were especially memorable. Walter M. Bortz II, M.D., in addition to more than 100 articles, has published seven books on aging and longevity. My favorite quote from Dr. Bortz, "Go make yourself necessary." Jan Masaoka, Director and Editor-in-Chief of Blue Avocado framed the discussion on what sustainability means to Villages. I've attached her PowerPoint, Nonprofit Sustainability.

Your ideas on activities, programming and any other issue that impacts Mill City Commons and its members is truly appreciated. I'm available via email or telephone 612-455-3329. I look forward to your comments!   -- Linnea

Argentinean film, A Fly in the Ashes

Sunday, November 13, 1:00pm matinee;  St. Anthony Main TheatrMSP Latin Film Festivale, 115 Main Street SE

This gripping Argentinean drama depicts the nightmarish predicament of two young rural women who are lured to Buenos Aires by job openings for domestics but instead find themselves enslaved as prostitutes. Writer-producer-director, the late Gabriela David (Taxi, an Encounter) deemphasizes the feminist angle inherent in the material, opting instead for a stark, straightforward drama.
