Two days left! 

 

The Northrop Dance 2011-2012 Season opens Saturday, October 22 with the Scottish Ballet at the Orpheum Theater. Northrop Dance has made special arrangements for Mill City Commons' members to be guests at a celebration hosted by University of Minnesota President, Eric Kaler and his wife Karen at Chambers' Rooftop Lounge before Saturday's performance. In addition, we are invited to join the dance company post-performance at Solera. This is an invitation only opportunity that requires an RSVP by this Thursday. Please see details below in this newsletter. It is sure to be an extraordinary and much talked about event!

Caffeine and camaraderie for the male members of MCC! This group meets every other Thursday at the Nicollet Island Inn and is hosted by various members who get the conversation going.

Farmers' Market Lunch & Cooking Class

Saturday, October 15, 11:00-1:00pm; Racciatti's Loft @ Humboldt, 750 South 2nd St, # 901 

Laura Tiffany, one of the original local food advocates in the Twin CitiesMC Farmers Market, as well as author of Cafe Metro Cookbook and former owner of Cafe Metro, will teach some quick and easy meal ideas using fresh produce from the Mill City Farmers Market.  Learn tips on preparing some of the more unusual vegetables that the market offers while enjoying lunch with wine. Laura Tiffany and host and sous-chef, Mary Racciatti, will share recipes for some of their favorite market meals and welcome your favorite recipes to share, as well.

MCC Author Celebration: Doug Baker

Hear from MCC Member Doug Baker about his new book,True North Groups, he co-wrote with Harvard Business School Professor Bill George. Doug will share how they wrote the book, why they wrote it, and what's in it for you, the reader. Enjoy wine and cheese with friends and neighbors.

Social Bridge

Join advanced or intermediate bridge players for a round of social bridge. You are expected to come with a partner at your level. (Advanced players play all the major conventions comfortably.) Northrop Dance: Scottish Ballet's Song of the Earth  

Special invitation for MCC Members: Meet U of M President Eric Kaler and Karen Kaler at an invitation only reception and the dance company at a post performance celebration.  

Saturday, October 22, 6:00 - 10:00 pm; Orpheum Theatre, 901 Hennepin Avenue  Scottish Ballet

Northrop Dance kicks off its 2011-12 season at the Orpheum Theatre with Scotland's national dance company, Scottish Ballet. With strong classical technique at the root of all its work, the company presents a double bill featuring Sir Kenneth MacMillan's masterwork, Song of the Earth.

MCC members are invited to attend U of M President Eric Kaler and Karen Kaler's Reception beforehand at the Chambers Rooftop Lounge (6:00 pm, 901 Hennepin Avenue).  There will also be a VIP post-performance wine and dessert celebration with the dance company at Solera, 900 Hennepin Avenue.  Tickets are $66 each.

Cooks of Crocus Hill: Chili Cook-off and Cooking Class   
Sunday, October 23rd;  Cooks of Crocus Hill, 877 Grand Avenue, 5:00 - 7:30 pm
 

This is the third and final stage of the Cooks' Chili Cook-off. Ten recipes were selected and submitted to the judges and narrowed down to three. This last stage has the Cooks' team of professional chefs preparing the finalists' chili to the letter of the recipes. Attendees will sample the three finalists and pick the winning chili. In addition, Chili Cook-off attendees will enjoy a fall salad, cowboy cornbread and triple-chocolate brownies. Cost is $20 for a night of fun and food!

MCC Education Series: Great Teaching Really Matters

Hear MCC Member and Bush Foundation President Peter Hutchinson discuss the foundation's focus on education and why it is critically important to the future of our communities and the vibrancy of our local economies. While many factors play a role in educational success, the Bush Foundation has chosen to focus on teachers because evidence proves that effective teaching can make a bigger difference than any other in-school variable.

Authentic East Hennepin Experience...free walking tour

Wednesday, October 12th, 5:00 - 5:45 pm; Tour begins at the corner of Main Street and East Hennepin Avenue

MCC Member Scott Parkin, President of the Northeast Minneapolis Business Association, invites members to this walking tour of East Hennepin Avenue for a brief history of St. Anthony Falls, a glimpse of the interior of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, and to hear tales of the neighborhood's first families.  Along the way you will view diverse architecture, assorted building rehabilitations, and hidden neighborhood art.  The tour will end at Nicollet Island at approximately 5:50 pm, just in time for everyone to enjoy the Third Ward Neighborhood Fest in the Nicollet Island Pavilion!
