Medicare open enrollment is earlier this year. It opens October 15 and closes at midnight December 7. You may not change your Medicare plans after December 7. Changes are effective January 1, 2012.

First Thursday: Casket Arts Building Tour & Dinner

First Thursd ays is the Open Studio and Gallery Tour held the first Thursday of each month in the NE Minneapolis Arts District. Many professional NEMAA member artists open their studios and greet visitors.
The Casket Arts Building served as a casket factory until January of 2005 when the current owners Jennifer Young and John Kremer put new life into the building by creating space for artists and a commercial studio. More than 100 artists and like businesses inhabit the building. The Northwestern Casket Company dates back to 1887, making it one of the oldest buildings in the Twin Cities.
We'll follow our tour with a Dutch treat dinner at Erte Restaurant, 323 13th Avenue NE.

Vital Aging Network Forum: Your Medicare

Since Medicare's annual open enrollment is earlier this year--October 15 through December 7, 2011--many people have questions about how to choose among the many options available. Presenters at this forum will provide an update on Medicare plans in Minnesota for 2012. Medicare plan providers and government service organizations will present breakout sessions detailing Medicare options.
Programs are free. Prior registration is appreciated but not required. Registrations are being handled online through the Vital Aging Network website under the "What's New" tab: http://www.vital-aging-network.org .

Farmers' Market Lunch & Cooking Class

Laura Tiffany, one of the original local food advocates in the Twin Cities , as well as author of Cafe Metro Cookbook and former owner of Cafe Metro, will teach some quick and easy meal ideas using fresh produce from the Mill City Farmers Market. There isn't a vegetable that Laura hasn't made delicious enough to entice even non-vegetable lovers. Learn tips on preparing some of the more unusual vegetables that the market offers while enjoying lunch with wine. Laura Tiffany and host and sous-chef, Mary Racciatti, will share recipes for some of their favorite market meals and welcome your favorite recipes to share, as well.

Northrop Dance: Scottish Ballet's Song of the Earth

Northrop Dance kicks off its 2011-12 season with Scotland's national dance company, Scottish Ballet. With strong classical technique at the root of all its work, the company presents a double bill featuring Sir Kenneth MacMillan's masterwork, Song of the Earth.
MCC members are invited to attend U of M President Eric Kaler and Karen Kaler's Reception beforehand at the Chambers Rooftop Lounge (6:00 pm, 901 Hennepin Avenue). There will also be a VIP post-performance wine and dessert celebration with the dance company at Solera, 900 Hennepin Avenue. These are private, invitation-only events held exclusively for Northrop subscribers and special guests. Tickets are $66 each.

MCC Member Scott Parkin, President of the Northeast Minneapolis Business Association, invites members to this walking tour of East Hennepin Avenue for a brief history of St. Anthony Falls, a glimpse of the interior of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, and to hear gripping tales of the neighborhood's first families. Along the way you will view diverse architecture, assorted building rehabilitations, and hidden neighborhood art. The tour will end at Nicollet Island at approximately 5:50 pm, just in time for everyone to enjoy the Third Ward Neighborhood Fest in the Nicollet Island Pavilion!
