Many of you know that MCC Member John Sten has moved to the Minneapolis Veterans Home, 5101 Minnehaha Avenue South. It's important to all of John's friends and neighbors that he continues to feel part of our Mill City Commons community. To support that commitment, I am developing a list of members who would like to become part of a regular visitor schedule. Social Bridge

Join advanced or intermediate bridge players for a round of social bridge.  You are expected to come with a partner at your level.  (Advanced players play all the major conventions comfortably.)  If you need help finding a partner, contact Linnea Tweed at 612-455-3329, and she will assist you.

Caffeine and camaraderie for the male members of MCC!  This group meets  

every other Thursday at Nicollet Island Inn and is hosted by 

various members who get the conversation going.

Celebrate the Metrodome's New Roof!   

Saturday, August 20, 1:00 - 5:00 pm; 900 South 5th Street, Gates D or H  

Celebrate the completion of the Metrodome's new roof and turf with an inter-generational activity and take home a piece of the old roof (first 3000 attendees)! Tailgating activities begin at 1:00 on the plaza with a monster truck demo. Activities inside start at 2:00 p.m. Games and activities will be occurring on the field -- team mascots and former players will be participating.  

At 2:30 MCC Members will take a 30 minute tour of the Metrodome and join a 3:00 reception. Mayor Rybak will speak at 3:30.

Architect's View of Mill City Museum Mill City Museum

Sunday, August 21, 1:00 - 2:30 pm;  Mill City Museum, 704 S. 2nd St. 

Join John Stark, a project architect during the construction of the Mill City Museum after the 1991 fire, for a walking tour of the public spaces, discussing the discoveries and construction issues.

The Cowles Center Backstage Pass 

Wednesday, August 24, 5:00 - 6:30 pm; The Cowles Center, 528 Hennepin Ave Cowles Center

The original Shubert Theater has been renovated to a stunning 500 seat theater.  This is Minnesota's new home for dance!  Join members and friends on stage for a cocktail hour and heavy appetizers catered by Crave Restaurant.  Enjoy a dance demonstration and a rare backstage tour of the new Goodale Theater.  Price is $30 per person.

Chili Cook-off

Cooks of Crocus Hill, 877 Grand Avenue, St. Paul

Fancy yourself a chili-making expert?  Have a great recipe?  Here's a chance to throw your hat in the ring!  The Three Stage Cook-off entry information can be found using this link. Attend the third stage October 23 and judge the finalists' chili recipes at the cook-off. Hurry...recipe submission is due by August 22!    

    

Minneapolis History Pub Crawl: Trolley on Washington Avenue

Tuesday August 30, 7:00 - 9:00pm (trolley departs at 7pm)

Travel by trolley down Washington Avenue to see and hear about the importance of railroads, warehousing, flour milling, immigration, entertainment and vice to the story of the Mill City. The tour will stop at significant historic places and two watering holes in historic buildings. (Age 21 and up only.) Fee: $25/$20 MHS members. The City of Minneapolis now has a great map available online that includes extensive information of interest to bicyclists, e.g. bike route locations, Nice Ride kiosk locations, points of interest and street conditions.

Restoring hope to torture victims ... The Center for Victims of Torture in St. Paul, MN 

An estimated 40,000 torture survivors live in Minnesota.  MCC Member John Cairns and the CVT invite you to learn more about how hope is restored to thousands of torture survivors throughout the world, and to hear some of their stories.  Join them on Tuesday, August 23, 5:30-6:30pm at Mill City Clinic, 901 S. 2nd Street for this unique opportunity. RSVP to rhughes@cvt.org or 612-436-4859 by Monday, Aug 22.
  
  

Harvest Moon Benefit Dinner by the Riverfront  

Annual fundraising event for the Mill City Farmers Market, September 11, 4:30-7:30 pm   

MCC Member Mary Racciatti would like you to know about this celebration of healthy foods and local farmers, to be held in the Mississippi riverfront between the Guthrie Theater and the Mill City Museum.  The festive September 11th Harvest Moon Dinner, will include a reception, taste tantalizing dinner orchestrated by Market Chefs Nick Schneider and Heather Hartman, followed by a live auction and delightful dessert.  For event and ticket information, click here

Hatha Yoga

This alignment-based class is held at the Yoga Center of Minneapolis, 212 3rd Ave N., Suite 205.
