Executive Director Update

 

Learn how to research your family history from the pros. Then utilize the subscription level research tools at the Minnesota Genealogical Society. Minnesota Genealogical Society Library Tour  

Friday, May 13, 10:00-11:30am.  Minnesota Genealogical Society, 1185 Concord St. N., South St. Paul 

Join Minnesota Genealogical Society (MGS) President Terry Kita and Librarian John Schade for an introduction to their library containing over 50,000 items including books, microfilm, microfiche, journals, and paper family history records.  Members will learn from Terry and John how to begin a family history.  Members are welcome to linger -- the library is not open to the public on Fridays.

In 1957, Americans were falling in love to the sweet sounds of Nat "King" Cole. Join us for an intimate portrait of one man, his music, and the dreams of a nation.  After it's premiere at Penumbra April 21-May 22, II Wish You Love Wish You Love will be presented at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. from June 11 through June 19, 2011.

Education: Succeeding in the Knowledge Economy

We live in a global knowledge economy, with education the greatest means of developing human capital.  From Pre-K to infinity, education is integral to our students, our workforce, and our future.  Minneapolis Public Schools Superintendent Bernadeia Johnson will speak.

Legacy Series: Examining Advance Directives 

Tuesday, May 17, 3:30 - 5:00 pm; Winslow House Community Room, 100 2nd St. SE 

Learn the difference between a living will, an advance directive and physician orders for life sustaining treatment. Then we'll walk you through the steps to complete the Minnesota Health Care Directive.  Barb Blumer will speak on these topics.  She led the Minnesota State Bar Association initiative to establish the Minnesota Health Care Directive in 1998, and continues to provide leadership in various aspects of advance care planning law and policy.

Guthrie Play Reading - God of Carnage 

Tuesday, May 17, 6:30 - 9:30 pm; Guthrie Theater, 818 South 2nd St., 8th Floor, Livingston Conference Room 

Play readings are hosted by a member of the Guthrie Staff or an Artist affiliated with the play.  Participants will be assigned parts for reading and may rotate parts as necessary.  All selections correspond with plays being staged at the Guthrie.  No theater experience necessary, come one and all!

 

God of Carnage is a self-proclaimed "comedy of manners ...without manners" in which the parents of two boys involved in a playground scuffle meet to discuss, logically and amiably, how to deal with the boys.

Social Bridge

Wednesday, May 18, 3:00 - 5:30 pm; Stone Arch Lofts Community Room, 600 South 2nd St. 

 

Join advanced or intermediate bridge players for a round of social bridge.  You are expected to come with a partner at your level.  (Advanced players play all the major conventions comfortably.) If you need help finding a partner, contact Linnea Tweed at 612-455-3329, and she will assist you.  Plan to arrive early as we will begin play immediately at 3:00 pm.

Artist Gallery Talk: Joe Paquet 

Saturday, May 21, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm;  Hoffman Parkin Urban Realty, 17 Fourth Street SE, Minneapolis Joe Paquet

Joe Paquet creates most of his work from life, believing that the direct correspondence with nature increases the potential for greater feeling.  Paquet's awards include both Artist's Choice and Collector's Choice from The 2007 Laguna Beach Plein Air Invitational as well as numerous others.  

MCC member Scott Parkin has invited Joe Paquet to display his art at Hoffman Parkin Urban Realty. On Saturday, Joe will discuss his love of the Plein Air technique.  Make this part of your Art-A-Whirl weekend!

Northern Spark Festival

For one night only, more than 60 regional and national artists together with the Twin Cities' arts community will display new art installations at public places and unexpected locations throughout the city. Directed and produced by

MCC New Member Spotlight

 Join us in welcoming Shelly Brandl, our newest Lakes Village member.  Shelly learned of the Beacon Hill Village project and the "village movement" at a conference in Washington, D.C. When she learned that Mill City Commons had launched a village in Minneapolis, she joined.   

Shelly is a child psychologist in private practice at North Psychology Clinic, as well as half-time Director of the Fraser Child and Family Center.  We're excited to  welcome Shelly to our organization and community!

This alignment-based class is held at the Yoga Center of Minneapolis, 212 3rd Ave N, Suite 205.
