Executive Director Update: Rooftop Garden at PSP    

   

Please consider joining me next Monday night for People Serving People's Chefs for Change Event hosted by Brenda Langton and Spoonriver Restaurant.  Host chefs provide all of the food with wine pairings. In addition to fabulous food and wine, you'll learn about urban farming and local and sustainable food production.

Legacy Series: Coordinating and Decluttering Paperwork and Passwords 

3:30-5:00 pm. Winslow House Community Room, 100 2nd St SE.

MCC tech guru Andy Trawick and Bill Bosch of Trust Point will discuss the steps you need to take and things to keep in mind when putting your affairs in order.  Topics will include taking an inventory of and consolidating assets, creating a list of digital items and accounts, and sharing your plan with family and financial advisors. Guthrie Play Reading: Arms and the Man 

6:30-9:30 pm. Guthrie Theater, 818 S 2nd St - 8th floor conference room. 

Guthrie at Dusk (Mark Vancleave)

Play readings are hosted by a member of the Guthrie Staff or an Artist affiliated with the play. Participants will be assigned parts for reading and may rotate parts as necessary. No theater experience necessary, come one and all! In Shaw's lighthearted poke in the eye to idealizing love, war and patriotism, Arms and the Man contrasts the practical military knowledge of a Swiss mercenary with the romantic posturing of a Bulgarian soldier who becomes a hero by leading an improbably successful, and stupid, cavalry charge. Nosy Neighbor Tour: Hennepin Energy Recovery Center 

March 17, 2:00-3:00 pm. Hennepin Energy Recovery Center, 417 N 5th St. 

HERCThe Hennepin Energy Recovery Center (HERC), located in downtown Minneapolis, is a waste-to-energy facility that burns garbage to generate energy. By burning roughly 1,000 tons of garbage each day, HERC provides reliable, renewable electricity and steam that supplies the downtown district energy system and Target Field. Go inside the facility and see waste-to-energy process works! The tour maximum is 25 people. Participants should dress appropriately for current weather conditions: no shorts, skirts, open-toed shoes, high heels, or sandals. Limited parking is available in the facility's parking lot on the northwest corner of 5th St N & 5th Ave N, so plan to carpool. Members, sign up here!

Nosy Neighbor Tour: Northern Clay Center 

March 24, 2:00-3:00 pm. Northern Clay Center, 2424 Franklin Ave E

The tour will include a look at the sales gallery, classrooms, glazing areas, studio spaces, and kiln room. See work from various artists and gain an understanding of the process of creating and firing a pot! Your will also see the exhibitions Michael Simon: A Life in Pots and Classmates, which feature the work of noted American potter Michael Simon and his peers, who all studied at the University of Minnesota. Northern Clay Center will provide refreshments. The tour is limited to 25 people. Members, sign up here.

Education: Succeeding in the Knowledge Economy 

March 28, 7:00-8:30 pm. Winslow House Community Room, 100 2nd St SE.

We live in a global knowledge economy, with education the greatest means of developing human capital. From Pre-K to infinity, education is integral to our students, our workforce, and our future. Joe Nathan, early proponent of the charter school movement in Minnesota, will discuss its current state in the U.S.  A former public school teacher and administrator, he directs the Center for School Change at Macalester College, which seeks to help transform public education and to produce significant improvements in student achievement. Tai Chi Workshop

Colin Snow, founder and principal instructor for Natural Step School will introduce Tai Chi's holistic approach to harmonizing body, mind and spirit. Learning Life Forum

This monthly forum examines firsthand perspectives on the decisive moments and movements that have shaped our history. With topics ranging from milling to music, and civil rights to civic responsibility, the series allows participants to spend memorable evenings engaged in lively discussions with some of Minnesota's most legendary public figures, including some MCC members.  This month features Dr. John Najarian, world-famous transplant surgeon, who formed one of the world's largest organ transplant programs at the University of Minnesota. It's Women's Work: Traces

Friday and Saturday, March 25 & 26. 8:00 pm. Open Eye Figure Theatre, 506 E 24th St.

This five-week series presents the work of established female artists crossing genres of art, music, dance, and performance art.  In Traces, the first program in the series, MCC members Nor Hall, Laura Crosby, and Harriet Bart create a collaborative project about the unexpected journey of a woman and children caught in the web of war, told through narrative poetry, art installation, and images.  Seating is limited.  Call 612-874-6338 or email the box office to reserve tickets.

 

Premier of Smart House, Livable Community: The Movie

Thursday, April 7, 6:00-8:00 pm. 33 McNeal Hall, 1985 Buford Ave, St. Paul.

Join us for the premier screening of "Smart House, Livable Community" a tpt production based on on our current exhibition, Smart House, Livable Community, Your Future. There will be a question and answer conversation and a reception following the screening. The exhibition will be open and visitors will be able to try out the materials profiled in the program.  The event is free and open to the public.

This alignment-based class is held at the Yoga Center of Minneapolis, 212 3rd Ave N, Suite 205.
