President's Message

The Brazil-Canada Chamber of Commerce, together with the DFAIT, made an outstanding event, last February 16th at 1 King Street West, in Toronto. The event, called "SECTOR BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN BRAZIL" had, as main speaker, Ms. Abina Dann, Canadian Consul-General in São Paulo, Brazil. She made an excellent and very objective presentation , with impressive amount of information and powerful remarks. The presentation was directed to everyone who is willing to invest in Brazil, and addressed which are the sectors with opportunities and which are not, detailing the existing ones. Abina was followed by three presentations made by Arnon Melo, President and Managing Director of MELLOHAWK, a Canadian Logistics Company, Garrick Ng, Vice- President, Sustainability, of the INNOVOLVE GROUP, which is acting in the area of Green Tech/Clean Tech , and by Robin Ingle, Chairman of Ingle International, Imagine Financial and Health Care Services International Inc. The three presenters followed the same pace of Ms. Dann talking about opportunities for Canadiann Companies in Brazil and talking about their own experiences in operating in or with Brazil. From more than 70 attendants, most of them Canadian entrepreneurs, we had enthusiastic feedbacks on that event, asking to repeat the theme in other events. We have to thank very much Ms. Abina Dann for the presentation, as well as Arnon, Garrick and Robin, and announce to our Members that the presentations are available, on request, by e-mail. Sincerely Raul Papaleo - President |

(Report) PWC - Shifting Centre of Gravity
M&A in Brazil-A Canadian Perspective
Brazil is a nation transformed. This South American giant's growth is unique among other emerging nations for its wealth of food, energy and mining commodities.
Brazil's unfulfilled domestic demand, hyper growth potential and globally competitive returns have spurred M&A action, both inbound and outbound, during the past decade. However, only a select group of Canadians have been actively deal-making with Brazilians.
Rather than dwell on the reasons and implications of historic precedent, PwC's perspective is that Canadians are well-positioned to share in Brazil's growth. A number of emerging deal drivers suggest that transacting with Brazil will be a promising new frontier for Canadian dealmakers.
The aim of this publication is twofold-to provide insight into Brazil, and to share our view on opportunities in Brazil for Canadians.

Fraga warns on Brazilian credit growth
(FT.com)
The former central banker who laid the foundation for Brazil's boom by helping to slay inflation has warned that rapid credit growth in the country needs close scrutiny from policymakers.
Arminio Fraga, one of Brazil's most successful former central bank presidents, said in an interview with the Financial Times that the quality of some new consumer lending was open to question, although Brazil was not approaching a "subprime"-style crisis.

Canadian developers go shopping in Brazil
Real estate companies are sinking billions into the South American country's property market, saying it is ripe for consolidation.
(Globe and Mail)
When the more than one million residents of Campinas, Brazil go shopping, they wander open-air markets and visit a smattering of outdoor strip malls. Despite a swelling middle class, the bustling industrial region about an hour outside of capital Sao Paulo has very little indoor retail space. The lack of a proper shopping mall is the kind of thing that Pierre Lalonde dreams about when trying to decide where to invest Ivanhoe Cambridge's money. Read the full Article: Click Here
