President's Message

Raul_Papaleo_photo

The Chamber has been very active in January, continuing into February, with its outreach program to increase contacts and un-covering of Canada-Brazil business opportunities. In addition, we strongly encourage our 'Leadership' members to become actively engaged in the Chamber and provide their thoughts, ideas, suggestions and participation through volunteer work - this is extremely important for the Chamber to provide an on-going fulsome representation of its members' interests.

Recent events that we have held have been well attended with increasing participation and we continue to encourage members and event attendees to send us feedback and suggestions for new events/activities.

In February we will be officially launching our Chapter in Montreal. On February 23, in Montreal, with the presence of the Brazilian Consul General from Montreal and several authorities from the Quebec Government we will be holding a general meeting to provide the business community and other interested organizations in Montreal an opportunity to come out and meet with members of our senior team and hear first hand of recent news and areas of focus in the Canada-Brazil business world. We have received strong expressions of support from Quebec interest groups and look forward to building this new Chapter's network and providing specific events for Quebec-based needs. If you are based in Quebec and/or have affiliates or know of potential interested parties in Quebec, we strongly encourage you to come out and join us at this inaugural meeting.

Sincerely

Raul Papaleo - President

Exclusive: Brazil not curbing foreign mining investment

The Brazilian government has no immediate plans to limit foreign investment in the mining industry and could delay plans to hike royalties, a senior government official told Reuters.

(Reuters)

A leading Brazilian newspaper reported last week that the government was planning to create hurdles for foreigners buying into Brazilian mines, creating widespread concern among potential investors.

"There is no such discussion. It's absolutely false," a government official with direct knowledge of mining policy discussions said late on Thursday in reference to the report.

Fire throws Rio Carnival preparation into chaos

A large fire swept through Rio de Janeiro's Carnival center Monday, destroying thousands of costumes and floats and throwing preparations for Brazil's annual festival of hedonism into chaos

(Reuters)

Television images showed thick plumes of smoke rising over central Rio early in the morning from a blackened section of the City of Samba complex, where the city's best Carnival groups spend months preparing their spectacular annual parades.

At least three of the 12 top samba groups, or "schools," were hit badly by the fire, media said, just weeks before their scheduled parades through Rio's Sambadrome for Carnival, which gets under way on March 4.
