Sorry We Missed You...

If you came home and found a Sorry We Missed You. Please call... door hanger on your front door, would you call? Maybe. What if the words important delivery were also on the door hanger? Would you call then? More likely. Once reserved for pizza parlors and housekeeping services, door hangers are helping process servers get the job done.

 

In a perfect process serving world, all services would be completed on the first attempt. But that rarely happens. Sometimes the intended subject has moved, and the server finds the address to be a dead end. Other times the subject is out, and a neighbor or family member assures the server that the subject will be "back soon." The server then spends more time and gas to make a second call, only to find that the subject hasn't returned, or came back and left again, or refuses to come to the door.  

 

The beauty of a door hanger lies in its simplicity. It is a printed notice saying that we attempted a delivery and would like to try again at a more convenient time. The subject is asked to call the phone number on the door hanger to schedule a time for the delivery. The door hanger does not indicate any details about the delivery, nor does it identify the process server. And yet, the notice is intriguing enough that ... Read more

Anyone involved with service of process knows that success is often born of a combination of innovation and persistence. Some subjects are unintentionally difficult to serve, either because they have an erratic schedule or have moved from the given address. Others make a game of evading me, and they will do everything in their power to avoid service. I take it in stride, because I have many creative ways to complete service. If an intended subject is repeatedly not at home (or work), or when I know I am being given the "run around" by the subject's family or neighbors, I just "kick it up" a notch. I use creative ways to surprise the subject into opening the door to a completed serve, and one of my favorite tools is a simple door hanger.  

 

A door hanger is a surprisingly effective tool for completing service. If a door hanger is left at the residence, I've found that the subject becomes curious, which motivates them to make a phone call inquiring about the delivery. That call gives me direct communication with the subject and the opportunity to gather the information I need to complete a successful serve.
