Welcome To Our E-Newsletter

Mark Headshot

Dear Friends,

It's a great time of the year with the summer season in full swing. We are all able to spend time outdoors and enjoy summer vacations. The weather has been extremely hot and the lack of rain is not helping anything. Remember, water wisely! At this point, your lawn and shrubs do not need any more watering than every other day. Watering for 40 minutes on the lawn and 15 minutes on the shrubs is a good guide, but each property is different. Also, remember to check with your local water company to find out if there are any watering restrictions in your neighborhood or to find out when you are allowed to water.

I would like to take the opportunity to officially welcome Matt Smith of Westwood to our team. Matt interned with us last summer and now, after his graduation, we welcome him full-time to our design team. You can read all about him below.

The Wyckoff-Franklin Lakes Patch is also hosting its "2012 Reader's Choice Awards" and Borst Landscape & Design has been nominated for the Favorite Landscaper category.  Please take a few minutes to vote, we would really appreciate it.

Also, don't forget to take a look at the article in our newsletter that talks about how to avoid pesty animals in your landscape. We are finding animals each year are becoming more destructive in our landscapes. We provide helpful tips on how you can deter these animals from destroying the flowers and plants in our landscapes.

As always, thank you for your support. You can reach me at 201-785-9400, ext. 204 or email me at mborst@borstlandscape.com to discuss any issues in this letter, to say "hello" or talk about your garden.

Sincerely yours,

Mark

NewsHow to Avoid Animals Ruining Your Plants

Rabbit

Do your plants and shrubs get unknowingly ruined every year? If it's not from the weather it most likely has to do with unwanted animals visiting your garden. Luckily, there are a few solutions to this issue. Castor Oil Extract, a non- toxic and biodegradable product, can be used to keep most animals away from the garden, gophers and squirrels especially. The taste from the castor oil causes an upset stomach to the animals. All you have to do is spray the oil over the plants you wish to protect! Watering the area after you spray will provide faster results. Another route to take is to plant things in your garden that the animals in your area don't like. Rabbits tend to stay away from aromatic plants, prickly plants, plants that ooze with milky sap, and plants with spines. If you are looking to plant flowers that rabbits and deer are not attracted to, you may find some luck with: marigolds, larkspur, sweet alyssums, dusty miller (annuals), alliums, bluebell, daffodil, daylily, foxglove, peony, and oriental poppy (perennials). A few herbs that will thrive in your garden while keeping deer and rabbits away are: thyme, lavender, mint, oregano, rosemary, lemon balm, and tarragon.

projectreviewA Project in Review: Ho-Ho-Kus Pool Installation

Pool Install 1
Pool Install 2

This young & growing family began transforming their backyard from  an old deck and overgrown plantings to a raised patio, beautifully done with colonial bluestone walls, full range color bluestone & recycled brick for the patio.

The backyard was opened up to an open lawn, play area and new plantings.   While creating the patio they fell in love with the changes being made and they added a custom grilling area overlooking the open lawn.

As the family grew, changes to the house were made and with a talk about the plants to be moved, ideas formed for the pool area, spa, lounging area and a new access to the lower level entertainment area inside the house that connects with it all.  One of the biggest challenges was the set back restrictions which designated the pool location and a creative layout followed.  Technical challenges involve drainage solutions, which tie in the house and site needs.

The pool is designed with safety in mind, using a retractable pool cover.  The pool design includes a bluestone wading area and swim jet to get that pool workout in.  The spa is designed to be in a separate location near the rear entry for winter use.

We are currently creating the stone walls leading to the lower level and we will be moving onto the patio once the pool coping is in.  They are working hard with contractors while the house is being renovated, the pool being installed and the landscape being transformed.  We, along with the family, are excited about the outcome.

Street 2 Street is a sports tournament program for inner city youth. It is part of Athletes in Action, a nationwide program that builds spiritual and hopeful movements through the platform of sports.

This year, Borst Landscape & Design donated t-shirts for the staff to wear throughout the season.

Also, throughout the summer, our advertising and PR agency, The DSM Group, is hosting a Wristband Revolution. The company decided that it would use its power to lend a helping hand and they want to see what its Facebook fans can do for the benefit of others. This year's wristband revolution contest goal: to capture every helping hand....with an orange wristband on it.

 Street 2 Street

Wristbands will be sold for $2.00 a piece at Devon Fine Jewelry, Sal Lauretta for Men, Maluka, Colony Florist and Gifts (both locations) and Wyckoff Florist and Gifts and 100% of the proceeds will go to Street 2 Street.    To find out more details about the revolution and where you can get your wristbands click here.

Strawberries

Garden Tips:

It's that time of year again, strawberries are at the peak of their season! Need some helpful hints on how to choose the best tasting strawberry? Try to buy from local strawberry fields or farmer's markets; if you're in the store choose locally grown strawberries. Buy strawberries that have bright green caps (stems), are plump and the most fragrant. Did you know that strawberries contain more Vitamin C than oranges!

Get your annuals and perennials into the ground before the heat waves come around.  June  is the best time to start planting to ensure beautiful colored flowers. For best results with your annuals and perennials, water them immediately after planting and at least once a week to keep the roots moist and healthy.

Lawn

Lawn Tips:

Fertilize your lawn! Grass is most active in its growth during the hot summer months. Putting down weed killer with your fertilizer won't harm your lawn, but only save yourself time. Another way to keep your grass green is mowing your lawn at a taller height. The taller the grass the more of a shadow there will be casted on the ground to reduce heat stress. Leaving grass clippings on the ground from mowing your lawn will serve as a free type of mulch. Take advantage of these easy techniques to make your lawn look great!
