Welcome To Our E-Newsletter

Mark Headshot

Hello Everyone,

As you may have noticed, the weather keeps getting crazier with each monthly newsletter. This is the first time we have ever plowed snow before Thanksgiving! It makes me wonder what is in store for us between this letter and the next. The late-October snow event caused quite a stir and our crews had to work overtime to clean up all of the fallen trees and limbs. Now, everything is under control and we are in the process of finishing up our regular fall clean-ups for our maintenance clients and deep root feedings for a lot of your properties. Deep root feeding of plant material is very important this time of the year. Feeding helps promote root growth which in turn makes your plant material that much healthier. Call us to find out more.

Last month I had the privilege of attending the PLANET Green Industry Conference located in Louisville, Kentucky. This is a national conference that is held once a year and gathers more than 20,000 people from the landscape industry. At this conference, our very own Landscape Designer, Joe Tuttle, won an award for the design and installation of the Nicolosi residence in Montvale. This is a very prestigious award...Congratulations, Joe!

Last month we were also featured in an article on Curb Appeal on MyBergen.com (click here to read the article). This article was to help people think about what goes into creating a better appearance for their homes' exteriors.

Lastly, don't forget that the holiday season is just around the corner. If you need us to help you with decorating your home, please just let us know. We "do it all!" It may be a simple tree and shrub lighting in the front of your home or something custom designed like our wreaths, greenery roping and winter container plantings.

As always, thank you for your support. You can call me at 201-785-9400 ext. 204, or email me at  mborst@borstlandscape.com to discuss any of the items in this newsletter, say hello, or to talk about your garden.

Sincerely Yours,

Mark Borst

article2Borst is Alight with Holiday Spirit

When the winter sun begins to set, your holiday decorations begin to shine. Outdoor lighting not only allows you and passersby to enjoy your holiday creations well past 5:00 p.m., but the right lighting can draw eyes to interesting elements in your displays that may be overlooked in the broad light of day. Lighting can also create varying levels of holiday spirit through strategic combinations of lighting styles, colors, volume and placement.

"Lighting is a great way to call attention to a beautiful evergreen, unique plantings or a specific part of the property," says Gail Tunis, Garden Designer at Borst. "Lights can also  be used to spotlight displays, be woven through props as enhancers, or stand on their own as a main attraction."

Borst's holiday decorating services extend to commercial and residential properties' trees, specialty plants, building façades and even interior railings or mantelpieces. Gail provides tips such as these for do-it-yourself decorators:

  • Because most fresh greenery lasts 4-5 weeks during the cold New Jersey winters, Gail advises that you decorate in late November or early December in order to keep wreaths and garlands looking great through the December holidays and into the New Year.
  • Safety first! To reduce the risk of fire, look for ETL- or UL-inspected lights labeled specifically for outdoor use. Check each bulb for cracks or broken sockets and all wires for fraying or loose electrical connections prior to installation. Replace any faulty equipment. (Note: Many people are also switching to LED lights, which use less energy and last longer than standard string lights, making up for any higher initial cost).
  • Tiny, classic, clear lights are still the most popular choice, but accenting a tree or display with a color such as red, green or blue can have a gorgeous effect as well. Moderation and placement are the keys to attractive outdoor lighting.
  • Use string lights or simple spotlights to highlight specialty plants, tasteful yard displays, potted seasonal plants, topiary trees, and natural greenery.
  • Pair greenery or ribbon with outdoor lights to decorate doors, window boxes, railings and columns.
  • Carry the festive mood indoors. Interior holiday lighting and decorations that are visible from the outside (think banisters, fireplaces and window sills or panes) should complement your external décor.

Joe Tuttle
Joe PLANET Award
Joe holding his 2011 PLANET Award

Joe Tuttle is always in "design demand." During his nine years at Borst, many clients have presented Joe with a broad range of challenging landscape projects - the outcomes of which have earned him a following of clients that are both surprised and, most importantly, gratified when they see their landscape visions come to fruition.

Joe is one of two landscape designers here at Borst Landscape and Design and brings with him almost forty years' experience in landscape design and construction.  A graduate of Rutgers University's Landscape Architecture program, Joe has worked in all facets of the industry and came to us after a long association with Sprainbrook Nursery in Scarsdale, NY.

Joe's landscape projects have won numerous national landscape awards, most recently one from the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) for a residence located in Montvale. The Merit Award is in recognition of Borst's commitment to improving the environment by enhancing the world's landscape.

Joe's love of plants and his extensive knowledge of plant material gives him a creative edge in designing distinctive residential and commercial landscapes.

Joe is not all business, however, as he enjoys spending his free time gardening, building model trains and seeking out the latest fine dining spot with his wife, Pattie.

Joe is the perfect person to contact if you have any questions regarding your landscape design. You can email Joe at  jtuttle@borstlandscape.com.

Borst for Pros!
Borst's very own Landscape Designer, Terry McMahon, was tapped as a professional source for a recent LowesforPros.com article titled "Save on Energy Expenses with Strategic Landscaping." Terry tutored readers on the monetary and environmental benefits of shade trees and gave tips regarding which trees to select and how to determine where to plant them. Read what Terry had to say in the full article here and feel free to call her at 201-785-9400 to discuss these and other energy- and cost-cutting landscape ideas for your own lawn.

The Importance of Curb Appeal

Check out our most recent placement on MyBergen.com.  It's a great article about the importance of Curb Appeal and offers several tips that will help you boost the aesthetic value of your home. Click here to read on.

Clothing Drive to Benefit Our Neighbors in Need

We recently held our annual clothing drive to benefit the patrons of the Star of Hope Thrift Shop in Paterson and recipients reached by Solid Foundation, a Midland Park skateboarding club that organizes charitable community projects in our area and makes regular visits to New York City to pass out coats, blankets and food. We had more than two full deliveries and we would like to thank our customers and the community for making these important donations.

 Oakland Eagle Scout Project

Throughout the next few months, Eagle Scout Doug Grasser of Oakland will be working closely with our Landscape Designer, Joe Tuttle, to accomplish his Eagle Scout project. Doug's project entails replacing a very old and crumbling retaining wall at the Oakland First Aid Squad building in Oakland with a new two-tier brick retaining wall. The wall will also include a memorial garden for the son of Vivian Walker, who founded the Squad in his honor. The planning stages have begun with a CAD drawing of the property survey, which will serve as a base map for the memorial design. Stay tuned for updates of this project's progress!

Seasonal Tips

Fall Deep Root Feeding

Deep Root Feeding

Fertilizing your trees and shrubs is extremely important to their health and longevity!  It promotes new growth for spring, develops root zones for new plantings, and encourages lush foliage and more flowers with brighter colors.

We are currently scheduling "Organic" Fall Deep Root Zone Feedings! Please call our office at 201-785-9400 to make an appointment with Bob Malgieri, our Tree and Shrub Care Specialist!

Winter Overcoat

holly

Evergreens, both needle and broadleaf, maintain live foliage throughout the winter. To prevent winter-burn, dehydration, and the branches from becoming brittle and breaking off the buds, all evergreens can benefit from a Winter Overcoat spray. This spray is an anti-desiccant/anti-transpirant in the form of a waxy coating applied to foliage to prevent water loss.

This application is recommended for all evergreens and is applied in November and December. Please contact Bob Malgieri for an estimate or questions at 201-785-9400.
