Old Bridge Commons - Road Work Update
A significant construction project will be starting on Old Bridge Road within the next two weeks. A developer will be constructing a new highway crossover with left and right turn lanes on Old Bridge Road approximately 750 feet north of Hedges Run Drive. The road improvements are designed to facilitate access for a new commercial site named Old Bridge Commons in accordance with proffered road improvements. (Note:This is the new project on Old Bridge where 7-11 and the Goddard School will be locating. You may recall that we mentioned this in our last E-Update. Construction of the project is ongoing, and the upcoming road improvements are in accordance with the proffers from the original rezoning. The crossover will be located in front of Cape Cod Court, the proposed entrance for Old Bridge Commons.)
This work will be performed under a VDOT permit. VDOT will be closely monitoring the construction activities to ensure that the contractor complies with the conditions of the permit and does not cause unsafe conditions or negative impacts to the traveling public. The hours of lane closures will be restricted accordingly.
Please feel free to contact our office with any questions/concerns, or contact the Manassas VDOT Permit office at 703-366-1916. |

Animal Shelter Hosts Low-Cost Rabies and Microchip Clinic
The Prince William County Animal Shelter will host a series of low-cost rabies and microchip clinics November 14-19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Blooms Crossing Veterinary Hospital, 9471 Manassas Dr., Manassas Park (20111).
The six-day clinic for dogs and cats is open to the public. No appointment is necessary; walk-ins are welcome!
During the clinic, rabies shots will be $20 and microchips will be $20.
"Rabies vaccinations are vital to the health of pets and owners," said Lieutenant Dawn Harman, Animal Control Bureau Administrator. "Rabies is a virus that affects all warm-blooded mammals and is always fatal after the onset of symptoms."
Lieutenant Harman added that micro-chipping is important because collars and tags can become lost if your pet escapes, while microchips are always with the pet. "And Animal Control carries microchip readers in the field and at the Animal Shelter to assist in quickly returning your lost pet," she said. "We hope the community will take advantage of this clinic."
For more information, please call the Animal Shelter at 703-792-6465. |

Dominion to Upgrade Existing Transmission Line in PWC | | | As the population has grown rapidly in Prince William County during the last decade, it has become necessary to upgrade facilities to keep pace with the increased demand for electricity. Additionally, Dominion is obligated to comply with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) reliability criteria that sometimes require the upgrade of electric facilities.
To meet these goals and obligations, Dominion proposes to upgrade and rebuild portions of the existing 115kV (kilovolt) transmission line in Prince William County. These changes will support future growth and result in continued reliable electric service for customers during peak demand periods.
The project will rebuild approximately two miles of the existing transmission line from Omisol Road in Lake Ridge northward to the Occoquan River, before crossing into Fairfax County.
New steel monopoles will replace the wooden H-frame structures in the center of the existing right-of-way. (No work will be done on the existing 230kV and 500kV transmission structures on either side of the transmission line.) The new monopoles will be complimentary in height to the towers on either side and match their width spans, reducing the visual impact in the corridor.
Construction activities will include dismantling the old H-frame structures, constructing new foundations, erecting monopole structures, cable pulling, and complete restoration of any areas disturbed by construction. No interruption of service is anticipated as a result of the transmission line work, and Dominion will coordinate with the Department of Transportation and local officials to reduce any potential impacts on traffic.
This project will help ensure that Dominion's transmission system continues to operate in a safe and reliable manner. Dominion's project will:
- add capacity to serve the high-growth areas in Prince William County;
- support continued economic development in the area, and
- help strengthen the electrical grid and improve overall reliability for the community.
Project Schedule
- Spring 2012 - Secure permits for construction; Community outreach and resident notification of intent to construct
- Fall 2012 - Construction scheduled to begin
- Spring 2013 - Target date to complete and energize transmissions line
For more information, please visit www.dom.com, keyword: Minnieville. You may also contact the Transmission team by sending an e-mail to powerline@dom.com or call (888) 291-0190 Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. |

Mobile Pet Adoption Van Arrives in PWC
It's here! P.A.W. Express, Prince William County's new Mobile Pet Adoption Van, has arrived.
The 26-foot van, purchased by the Prince William SPCA with a $154,565 PETCO Foundation grant, is being housed at the Prince William County Animal Shelter and will make its public debut at the Animal Shelter's Holiday Open House on Saturday, December 10, at 2 p.m. The van has the capacity to hold approximately 26 animals, and has roll doors that allow the animals to be viewed from the outside. Walk-through capability will allow potential adopters to meet the pets in the van.
The custom-built van will be used to increase adoptions of pets at the Prince William County Animal Shelter. The van will also assist in relief efforts of companion animals in crisis and serve as a transport vehicle to a spay/neuter facility.
"We are thrilled that the Prince William SPCA has been chosen for this grant, and that we are able to bring this mobile adoption van to the county," says Prince William SPCA President Melissa Korzuch. "The mobile van will open up so many opportunities for the shelter pets to gain exposure and ultimately find a home. It is a perfect example of how municipal shelters and nonprofits can work together to improve the lives of companion animals."
The Prince William SPCA and the Shelter are developing a schedule of appearances for the van at various community events, festivals and at PETCO stores in the Northern Virginia area beginning in January 2012. If you would like the P.A.W. Express to make an appearance at your event, e-mail pwspca@pwspca.org
The grant was submitted as a joint partnership between the Prince William SPCA and the Prince William County Animal Shelter. Prince William SPCA volunteers wrote the successful grant application that secured the funding for the van. The PETCO Foundation was looking for proposals that were creative, increased connections with their local community and local PETCOs, employed innovation, and most importantly enhanced the lives of animals in alignment with the goals of the PETCO Foundation. The grant covers the cost of the van plus five years of maintenance and administrative costs. Additional expenses after the first five years will be provided through fundraising efforts.
The Prince William SPCA was established to benefit the animals of the greater Prince William County, Virginia, area. Donations are tax-deductible and may be mailed to: PWSPCA, PO Box 6631, Woodbridge, VA 22195. www.pwspca.org |
