April 2011
spring fog

Greetings!

Our Season has begun.....

Spring has come early this year! My table is ready for its first picnic....will it be with wild leeks, spinach or chives?  I can even visit farms like Vicki's Veggies and see all the great produce starting to bloom. What better time to begin creating some new recipes for the season, especially with fresh herbs.

Speaking of herbs, our cookbook, The Art of Herbs has expanded its retail outlets to include newcomers The SHOP at AGO and others. Susan and I will be busy in Toronto this month with our first event at Indigo and I'll be cooking up a few treats at my favorite kitchen shop, Williams-Sonoma.

Classes have started earlier this year too with a number already sold out. So whether you are planning a day trip or a longer stay to The County, join us this season for a private class or one of our monthly group classes. Packages with accommodations are also featured on our web site.

Let's have fun in the kitchen together, cooking all things fresh.... from the farm.

Happy Easter weekend!

National nomination.....

"Taste Canada nominates  The Art of Herbs"

Yes, we are excited to say the least. Taste Canada - The Food Writing Awards is the new home of the former Canadian Culinary Book Awards. Working in partnership with the University of Guelph, they recognize and celebrate the best in Canadian food writing. Nominated in the Single-Subject category, The Art of Herbs is the only self-published nomination in this category. This new category has the largest number of titles, 25, and holds almost a third of the entries. The short list will be out in August...so cross your fingers for us!

"A First Nations blessing".....

Blessing plate Thanks to Kim and David Maracle for a very special cooking class at our school last weekend. Focused on our indigenous foods, we all learned about the customs, recipes and folklore about our First Nations people.  This is a photo of our blessing plate for the meal. A little sample of everything we cooked was blessed with a smudging ceremony (burning of sweet grass in the cup, with the eagle feather, top left). And then placed outside to ceremonially share with those that could not be with us.

David and Kim operate a wonderful little cafe, on the Bay of Quinte in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, just over the bridge form The County. Join them this summer and also see David's beautiful sculptures and CD's in their shop. Lil Crow Cafe & Gallery
