Presidents' Demand to Extend Academic Year
A Clarification
A few weeks ago, you should have received a copy of the September 2011 issue of the Voice, the periodical of the Council of New Jersey State College Locals. In this issue, the Council reported the demands of the governor and the university presidents at state contract negotiations. One section talked about the demand of the presidents to extend the academic year. The presidents want to extend the 32-week academic year to June 30 so that they can require faculty to attend mandatory meetings, participate in training sessions, meet with students, etc. In the present contract, Article XII (Faculty responsibilities), section A. 1. states: "Institutional responsibilities of the faculty shall include teaching responsibilities and other responsibilities as defined below. The basic academic year teaching load shall be assigned over thirty-two (32) weeks of instruction and shall occur during the period of payment which commences September 1 and ends on June 30, and may not exceed such thirty-two (32) week period unless otherwise agreed to by the concerned faculty member." Much like K-12 teachers who work 10 months but arrange to get paid over a 12-month period, faculty work 32 weeks but get paid over 10 months. The presidents want to be able to demand that faculty perform additional work, without additional pay. The union negotiating committee has rejected that proposal. |
Use It or Lose It!
Vacation Time for 12 month Professional Staff and Librarians
As a friendly reminder, please be sure to check your vacation leave balance in Web for Employees. Per the university policy regarding vacation leave, full-time 12-month employees receive 22 days per year (review full policy here: http://www.montclair.edu/HR/employeehandbook/benefits/leave/unclassified.html). Full-time professional staff and librarians can carry over one full year's worth of vacation leave. This means that if you have more than 22 days (or 154 hours) on January 1st, you will lose them. Therefore, it is wise to check your balance now and see how many hours you have compared to 154. If you have more, now is an excellent time to work out with your supervisor when you would like to take your remaining vacation leave so as not to lose it. After all, you earned it!

 | Richard Wolfson, President AFT Local 1904 |
President's Corner
As I walk across campus, I am constantly asked about negotiations and what people can do to help. The fact is that there is something that each and every one of us can do. Try any or all of the following: participate in our Solidarity Walks; come to General Union meetings; perform in or attend the AFT Local 1904 musical event, Work That Matters - A Celebration; contribute to the Committee on Political Education (COPE) with a minimal deduction from each check. Become a visible part of the Union, and you send a message to the administration that we care about our working conditions, our hard-earned salaries, and our medical benefits, as well as the well-being of our students and our institution.
This is not the time for apathy. Make no mistake about it: the administration is watching. We are in the middle of the most difficult contract negotiations ever, with the presidents trying to limit or even eliminate our step increases, sabbaticals, career development opportunities, and a host of other employee rights. The presidents are pushing for ever-increasing power and unfettered authority to do what they want through hand-picked Trustees, state legislation, and unprecedented access to the Governor and Legislature.
Let Dr. Cole and our administration know that you stand behind your negotiation team. Show them you will not stand for the erosion of our compensation, benefits, academic freedom, intellectual property rights, or access to due process. Do it by participating, by wearing blue to our events, and by talking to colleagues about supporting our collective response to the unprecedented contractual concessions that are being demanded.
If you see me on campus, I'd be happy to talk to you about these issues. In the meantime, the operative word is "participation."
