Academic Year 2011-2012

AFT Local 1904 welcomes and wishes you well in this new academic year. The upcoming year presents many challenges and the officers of AFT Local 1904 will continue to work hard on your behalf and are looking forward to hearing from you regarding any questions or concerns you may have.
Board of Trustees

Montclair State University's Board of Trustees met for the first time during the new Academic Year on September 8, 2011. In his address to the Trustees, Rich Wolfson encouraged the Trusteesto take an official published position on free speech, freedom of assemblage, and against bullying and workplace violence. A position that affirms Montclair State University as a place where ideas are important, where discourse is essential to the education we provide, and where the community is a safe environment, with everyone looking out for each other. The entire statement can also be viewed on the home page of our website.

State-wide Negotiations Update

On August 3, 2011, the Council of New Jersey State College Locals, AFT, AFL-CIO (Council) met with the State of New Jersey (State) to continue negotiations on reaching agreement on a new statewide contract. This meeting was devoted to the Council seeking further clarification of the proposals presented to us by the State. At this time, both sides have concluded their questioning about the proposals before them. The next two negotiation sessions are scheduled in September will be devoted to a more substantive discussion of the items on which both sides might be able to reach agreement.

In keeping with Local 1904's commitment to keeping our members informed of the status of state-wide negotiations, we will provide you with an update of the results of negotiation sessions to be held later this month. It is the Local and Council's position that all the provisions of the State-wide Master Agreement other than the economic issues remain in effect until a successor contract is ratified.

Thank you for your support.

Professional Staff Meeting Held in August

Professional Staff gathered on August 18th to learn about the proposals exchanged between the Council of New Jersey State Colleges & Locals and the State of New Jersey. Some items  proposed by the State that will directly impact professional staff if not successfully negotiated are:

  • maximum contract length of two years for multi-year contracts
  • right of management to not reappoint without providing just cause
  • elimination of mandatory meetings with supervisors
  • requiring work missed due to being absent for any reason (e.g. vacation, sick, professional conference) to be completed in a timely manner, irrespective of the scheduled workweek
  • elimination of tuition waiver program
  • elimination of tuition reimbursement program
Professional Staff were given a call to action, and asked to share creative approaches as to how the campus community can be made aware of their contributions to the university and students. If you have suggestions, please send them in. Please contact me, Lisa Ambrose, professional staff coordinator & negotiations leader at: lisa.ambrose@aftlocal1904.org. Suggestions from ALL, not just professional staff, are welcome.  It is time to stand side-by-side in our unit and support each other through these turbulent negotiations.

Initiative Stares Down Workplace Bullying

The first of nine web installments of Beverly Peterson's original documentary, "What Really Killed Kevin Morrisey?"is accessible on Our Bully Pulpit's website and the remaining installments will be released on the web over the next several months. This original documentary film exposes the devastating effects of workplace bullying.

The documentary footage examines the controversial story that made headlines one year ago: the suicide of Kevin Morrissey of literary journal Virginia Quarterly Review and allegations that his boss and editor, Ted Genoways, had bullied him.

Ms. Peterson is an Assistant Professor in the Broadcasting Department at MSU and AFT Local 1904 is grateful for her work on this important topic - workplace bullying - as it is an issue the Local regularly combats on behalf of its members.

President's Corner

A new school year is upon us, and I hope that you're all ready for the our returning students as well as the freshmen that are wandering our halls wondering what to do. That's why we're here: for the students. The educational mission is always in the forefront of the Local's activities, since good working conditions make everything we do better for everyone.

In addition to new students, there are new Faculty and Professional Staff just starting who may also be overwhelmed by new surroundings and new colleagues. Don't forget that once upon a time each and every one of us was new and needed a smile and support. Extend a welcoming hand to the new arrivals!

Our first General Union Meeting (GUM) of the year is Wedneday, September 14, and I hope to see many new and old colleagues there. Join us for light refreshments and discussions about the issues that the Local is working on.

As you know, our contract expired on June 30. The Local Negotiating Team has been working hard all summer in both state and local negotiations. We've made progress on a variety of items, while on some things we are still miles apart. We'll have a full discussion with details at the GUM.

In preparation for the new year and for continued negotiations with the State, the Local is reinstituting our Department Stewards Program to allow for better and more timely communications. We have stewards in place in some departments and we'll be asking more of you to help in this area. I thank you in advance for your help.

I look forward to seeing old friends and new faces at the GUM next week. I guarantee this will be an interesting year.

Rich Wolfson
