Making A Difference Everyday
MSU Senior, Noelle Roller, on Louise Davies, MFA Program Assistant
Recently Noelle Roller reflected on her experience at Montclair State University and took the time to share how Louise Davies helped her have success during her undergraduate experience. Noelle stated, "The truth is, you can't do anything entirely alone. There will always be many people along the way, they influence you and inspire you."
Noelle met Louise before classes started. She needed a job and found the listing for an MFA student assistant job on campus. For Noelle, applying for the position "started off as just an idea . . . to make some money" to help pay for some of her expenses, but the job became much more over time and Noelle states that "without Louise I would not have had the same college experience . . . ."
Little did Noelle know that she would spend the next four years working in the MFA office as Louise's student assistant. The job "became so much more" for Noelle.
Her freshman year at MSU was challenging. It was Noelle's first time living on her own while learning how to juggle work, school and her social life. It was a lot to balance but not "having a job wasn't an option." She recalled feeling very "overwhelmed and anxious and at times really home sick." She realized for the first time that she couldn't rely on her mother for support. However, she soon found she could turn to Louise.
Noelle explained that Louise was much more than her boss. "She kept me on my feet and gave me a hug when I needed [one]. . . If I was really stressed out about a big test or paper, she let me make up my hours another day. I don't know what I would have done without her help."
"Anyone who knows Louise knows what a genuine and salt-of-the-earth person she is. . . . She goes beyond the title of being the MFA Program Assistant." Noelle explained that it was difficult at times for others in her life to understand the "challenges of adjusting to a new environment like college, but Louise understood. . . . [S]he made coming to work feel like a break from all of my stress. She helped me feel good about myself. . . ."
Louise helps her to remember "what it is like to be passionate and good at what you do. . . ." According to Noelle, it is a person like Louise - someone who is "dedicated and skilled" who keeps "things running smoothly and efficiently." Louise inspires Noelle to do the same.
Noelle shared her thoughts about Louise because she believes that individuals "like Louise need to be recognized not only for their hard work and contribution to their jobs on campus, but also [because of] who they touch and inspire." Noelle is one of the many students Louise has had a positive impact on and she feels "fortunate to say that Louise has been a huge part of what got me by during my years here at Montclair State."
Noelle is now preparing to graduate and is in the process of searching for her next job. Because of Louise's support and guidance, she knows she can "let go of some fears thanks to what Louise" has taught her.

Why Martin Luther King Jr. Would Support the Public Worker Protests
Written by Martin Luther King III, president and chief executive officer of The King Center
Forty-three years ago my father, Martin Luther King Jr., was assassinated while he was in Memphis, Tenn., supporting a strike of municipal sanitation workers. It was, in his eyes, more than a quest for a few more dollars in a paycheck. He saw the strike as part of the great struggle of his time-a struggle for democracy, for truth, for justice and for human dignity. These are the same basic reasons that my father would be joining with millions of other Americans today in supporting public employees in Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio and other states, where collective bargaining is now under attack. CNJSCL Election Results
At the April 8th Council of New Jersey State College Locals meeting, Bill Sullivan was elected Executive Vice-President and Jennifer Higgins was elected Representative for Professional Staff. Winning these positions show how respectful the CNJSCL delegates are to the input of our Local over the last year. Having these two seats on the CNJSCL Executive Board gives us a greater voice in our bargaining unit. Bill Sullivan and Jennifer Higgins will bring our most pressing issues to the CNJSCL in the coming months in what will most certainly be difficult negotiations with the State.

President's Corner
We Will Make a Difference in November
Last Tuesday I participated in a Labor/Education Roundtable sponsored by US Representative Rush Holt. It met at the Plainsboro Public Library, and since Doug Larkin, my colleague in Curriculum and Teaching, is in Holt's NJ-12th district, he came with me. There were about thirty Labor participants from Education, the building trades, industrials, prisons. nursing and the State Police. State Assemblywoman Linda Greenstein was represented by her Chief of Staff, and Wayne DeAngelo, Assemblyman from NJ Legislative District 14 and Assistant Business Manager of IBEW Local 269 was there as well.
Doug and I didn't have any idea what to expect. After the introductions, Representative Holt spoke for a while about how important Labor is to America and how his voting record on issues pertaining to Labor is exemplary. He talked briefly about how important Labor will be in the next election and detailed recent polling that shows that Americans are solidly behind the retention of collective bargaining for both public- and private-sector unions. He even touched on the notion that tax cuts are not the answer and we may have to look at tax increases (particularly the millionaire's tax) if we want to have social justice in the forefront of American policies. After his remarks, Holt asked each person for input. I asked when he thought Obama would come out solidly in support of Labor, collective bargaining, and workers' rights; he didn't really answer. Others spoke of how their members are suffering and how important they are to society.
It all ended abruptly after only 90 minutes and, frankly, I couldn't figure out why he called the meeting in the first place. We didn't talk strategy; he didn't ask for money or support. But on the way home it dawned on me: Labor is the last hope for the Democratic party and for those who believe that a strong middle class is essential for a strong democracy. We, organized Labor, with our votes and money, are all that stand between us and the Tea Party and the right wing of the Republican party. This meeting was Representative Holt's way of letting us know that. And this President's Corner is my way of reminding you that it is indeed our votes, our organizing, and our democratic participation that stand in the way of unfettered control of America by big business and the interests of the wealthy.
