Owl Pellets

Owls fascinate me, so when my mom agreed to order us owl pellets to dissect, I was excited! We ordered medium and large pellets from Great Horned Owls and Barn Owls. Since owl pellets are inexpensive, we wanted to order several, so our friends could join in the fun. Owls often swallow their prey whole and later regurgitate the fur or feathers and bones. Erik printed out pages showing illustrations of bones that we could use to help us identify the bones we found when sifting through the pellets. We learned that owls can eat as many as a dozen mice in one night. We found at least one skull in each pellet - mostly from voles. A vole is a tiny rodent that resembles a mouse.

Owl pellets would make a great gift for  teachers or kids! Owl Brand Discovery Kits also sell great DVDs with interesting information on Birds of Prey. Order a unique, fun stocking stuffer now by clicking on the photo above!

Attract Birds!
Erik and I hung nesting boxes and bird feeders in our backyard when we lived in Ft. Worth, Texas. We didn't wait long before a pair of Eastern Blue Birds moved in. Blue birds mate for life and both male and female build nests, feed their young, and teach their young how to fly. Birdhouse kits make a great gift for everyone!

Bionic Eye

After we dissected the owl pellets, we wanted to take a closer look at the bones we found. This is our friend, Jack, using the  EyeClops to project a magnified image onto our TV. We were able to examine tiny hairs, teeth and other bones. We use our Eyeclops when we find rocks, shells, and other treasures. We even examine our cuts! An Eyeclops makes a great gift!
