Not So Creepy Critters Newsletter
Issue: #4 December 2010
Christmas newsletter
Greetings!

Erik and I want to wish you a Merry Christmas! We're asking Santa for...you guessed it...more critters. We visited the reptile show in Arlington, Texas last week and met many informative breeders. We learned about blue tongued skinks, crested geckos, snakes, poisonous dart frogs and more! We only have 4 days before we find out what Santa is bringing us! We'll feature our new additions in our January newsletter.
We also visited the trading post at the Dallas Zoo and have more bones, minerals, and fossils to add to our display tables. We're ready to share all that we learned, so call today to book a reservation for 2011! Remember, we bring the field trip to you!

Winter Adventure
winter fun Put down the video game controllers and TV remote and get outside! There are many fun things to do in Corpus Christi, Texas. Don't let the cool weather keep you from enjoying the beach! Head out to the jetties to explore. There are lots of things you can do there while staying dry, like looking for sea anemones, sea turtles, and dolphins. Take pictures to make a photo journal of your adventure.

Rat + Cat + Dog = Best Friends!
Greg Pike

Courtney and I wanted to visit the stockyards while we were in Ft. Worth last week. As we turned down Exchange Avenue, Courtney spotted a rat riding on a cat who was riding on a dog. It sounds like a Dr. Seuss book! My mom had seen Greg Pike on Youtube and wanted a chance to talk to him about his animals. We parked and caught up with Mr. Pike, Booger, Kitty and Mousey! Mr. Pike told us that Booger, his Lab/Rottweiler mix, raised Kitty. Mousey, the rat, was easy to train to stay on Kitty's back. In fact, rats are so easy to train that Mousey is actually the name for several rats that travel with Mr. Pike and enjoy riding on Kitty's back. During our conversation, a Dalmatian wandered over and started barking at the animal trio. Courtney was holding Mousey, but Mousey didn't feel safe. She jumped out of Courtney's hands and ran to hide under Booger. Booger barked until Mr. Pike calmed him. All the animals were very obedient. Cesar Milan would be impressed! Mr. Pike believes people can learn a lot from his animals. We can get along with each other no matter how different we are!

Day Geckos

This is Fiesta, our Day Gecko. Day Geckos are from Madagascar and other islands in the Indian Ocean. They were made popular from the Geiko commercials on TV. Even though Fiesta will not sell you insurance, she is pretty cool. There are about 25 different species and subspecies of Day Geckos. Day Geckos are diurnal, which means they are awake during the day and sleep at night. Because they're diurnal, they need a UV light when kept in captivity.  Another interesting thing about Day Geckos is that they do not have eye lids! When I have staring contests with Fiesta, she wins every time.  Day geckos reach about 4-6 inches when fully grown.  Fiesta's basic meal includes super worms and crickets, but she also likes to lick baby food and honey from a spoon!

Collect some water while you're at the beach to save for an experiment. On a day or night that the temperatures fall below 32 degrees, set out a couple of pie pans. In the first pie pan, pour in the salty water from the beach. In the second pie pan, pour in the same amount of tap water.  Predict which will freeze first. Check the water every hour - if you're experimenting during the day! Make a chart to organize your information! You can also try the experiment using the freezer! Move over, Christmas leftovers!
