Welcome, all, to Picker Institute's spring 2011 newsletter! We want to begin with a brief excerpt from the open letter in this year's annual report:  

          

The man who died of pneumonia at the age of 74 after a long and misdiagnosed illness, the man whose dying wife did not receive a drug that would have eased her acute pain, the woman who died of undetected kidney failure because she had no health insurance and no primary care doctor -- not one of these victims was just anyone. How did they become accidental victims of a healthcare system that loudly claims to be the best in the world?

In my state, Massachusetts, as of 2010, every hospital by law must have a patient and family advisory committee reporting directly to the board. That's very exciting."

Jennie Chin Hansen2011 Picker Award for ExcellenceŽ
in Long-Term Care 

Jennie Chin Hansen, CEO of the American Geriatrics Society, is the winner of the 2011 Picker Award for Excellence in Long-Term Care. Ms. Hansen, who came to the AGS in March 2010, after two years as president of AARP, has been a tireless advocate for elders in her determination to improve the health, independence and quality of life for older people. 
  
Ms. Hansen will accept her award on August 4 at this year's Pioneer Network National Conference, where she will also give the annual Picker Lecture.

 

The first award in long-term care was to Dr. Bill Thomas in 2009, and the second was to Karen Schoeneman of CMS in 2010.

Heathcare decisions are especially difficult when the patient suffers from advanced dementia and cannot communicate for him or herself. These decisions are extremely stressful and burdensome for families. These are conversations that should always occur in the setting of advanced dementia and healthcare professionals should always strive to engage in these conversations before moments of crisis.
