All brands of pigment ink settle. The pigment settling can begin to occur in as little as 3-4 weeks. Symptoms of pigment settling are nozzle clogging, banding, a change in tone or color...but it can also result in clogged ink lines if allowed to sit for a long time.
When a printer is started back up for service that has pigment settled in the ink lines, often the thinner ink fluid is easily pulled into the print heads followed by the dislodging of the pigment solids into the ink dampers which in turn clog. At this point, the user can spend days and days trying to get a decent nozzle check, after the initial and misleading nozzle check from the initially thinner ink.
Instead of facing that scenario, we recommend that you install a set of PiezoFlush cartridges - perform either an INIT FILL or 3 Power Cleanings. This will remove all of the pigment ink from your printer and replace it with PiezoFlush. At this point it is safe to turn off the printer.
When you return it to service, you simply re-install the ink carts and perform the same INIT FILL or 3 Power Cleanings. That will return fresh ink to the heads.
We first formulated PiezoFlush because we needed an ink that would remain in a printer for a very long time. Piezography K7 when used in 8 ink printers does not use one of the ink jet heads. It actually uses it only when it performs a nozzle check. So PiezoFlush had to be safe enough for long term print head exposure. But, we also made it strong enough to be useful for cleaning out stubborn clogs of agglomerated pigment.
PiezoFlush is stained pink so that you can see it when it prints during the nozzle check. PiezoFlush is made by Vermont PhotoInkjet and sold only in the USA be InkjetMall. But, we are not moving away from our concern with the environment by offering pre-filled cartridges. While Epson makes their cartridges nearly impossible to refill, ours are easy. You can use the LF Chip resetter and our syringe with blunt needle. If you're very serious about refilling production levels of these cartridges, we will sell you one of our professional cart filling needles that fit our equipment and any other standard Luer-Lok syringe (like the one we sell.) We will have PiezoFlush soon for the Epson 7900 and 9900. For the Epson 3800 we have refillable carts and PiezoFlush in bottles. We will have the same system for the Epson 3880 shortly.
