firefighter graphic Fire Season - Fire Crisis
Firefighters dwindle to 102

With fire season starting in March  going through April, landowners should be aware of the dwindling number of state fire crews due to state budget cuts. The LFA has been at the head of this crisis formulating action in concert with the La. Dept. of Ag and Forestry. We  are asking our members to contact their legislators and make 3 key points:

·  No further cuts to the Office of Forestry (OOF) budget

·  Designation of firefighters at the OOF as Public Safety personnel

·  A minimum of 142 firefighters.

 Teacher Tour June 13-16
Tour shortened to attract more

The annual Teacher's Tour in Alexandria will go on despite personnel cuts to the Office of Forestry but the week-long event has been shortened. "We also feel that this will appeal to more teachers who want to attend," said Wade Dubea, state forester. Teachers pay no money for the tour but forestry sponsors cover the $400 expenses.  The tour brings teachers to mills and logging sites and forested areas while demonstrating hands-on activities from Project Learning Tree for them to take to the classroom. Teacher names are being solicited as well as sponsorships. Call Whitney Wallace at 225-925-4500 for information.

Capitol rotunda Legislative session April 25
Follows redistricting session

After the special redistricting session is complete, the regular session will run from April 25 - June 23. Three pieces of legislation are in the forefront for the LFA:
  1) Making the Public Safety/Protective Service designation for forest fire fighters
  2) Allowing an annual permit to move overweight processing equipment from one jobsite to another
  3) Revising the timber theft bill to include co-owners who are responsible for treble damages and attorney fees in the case of timber theft
Anyone who would like their name added to the Legislative Report list email us at lfa@laforestry.com.
