Action Alert

Tell your legislator it's time to Shape Up!

Fit Kids Learn Better: Protect P.E. in K-12 Schools ...

Dear Friends,

Call Your Legislators TODAY

Today, health advocates from across Illinois are in Springfield for Shape Up Illinois! -- an event to educate legislators about the importance of daily, quality physical education (P.E.) in schools.

Even though you might not be able to join our friends in Springfield, you can still help by calling your legislators today -- tell them "Fit Kids Learn Better!"

Contacting legislators is easy...

Step #1: Dial the Capital Switchboard in

Springfield at (217) 782-2000.

Step #2: Ask for your state representative/senator by name.

(Click here if you're not sure who your state

 senator / state representative is.)

Primary Talking Point: To make this process as easy as possible, consider using the bullet point below as your primary talking point:

  • Please tell my legislator to protect our children by protecting daily P.E. in K-12 schools.

Additional Talking Points:

  • High-quality P.E. is as important as math, science, or any other core subject because it correlates directly to the health and well-being of students for the rest of their lives.

  • Research suggests that physical activity has cognitive benefits, too, and can make students more receptive to learning.  Fit kids DO learn better!

  • We are proud that Illinois is one of the first states to require daily physical education for all students K-12. Since P.E. class is increasingly becoming many kids' only opportunity for daily physical activity, it is a particularly important class in the fight to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic

About the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity

The Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity (IAPO) is a statewide coalition comprised of stakeholders working for a state-level response to the obesity epidemic. IAPO works to shape and advance solutions to reverse dangerous obesity trends.
IAPO supporters believe that Illinois must respond to the obesity epidemic by developing coordinated systems, policy improvements and investment on the scale of the problem.  This initiative was launched and is coordinated by the Illinois Public Health Institute (IPHI).

With input from stakeholders throughout Illinois, IAPO developed the State Obesity Action Roadmap and our corresponding 3-Year Roadmap Goals to guide Illinois on a healthier path through changes in the way we work, play, learn, eat and live.
