Thank you to everyone who came out to support AtG and enjoy a fun round of golf at Old Natchez Country Club! It was cold outside, but the rain held off & the warm pasta from Brother's Pizza was a great lunch after being in the cold! Perhaps it was because of the cold, or maybe they just wanted another chance to win the great closest to the pin and longest drive prizes, but this year our golfers decided that "you must be present to win"....next year we encourage everyone to stay for lunch- you never know what you'll miss! :-)

We would like to thank the Predator's Foundation, Dillard's, Red Pony, Aquarium Restaurant, Puckett's grocery and the Crag for generously donating our prizes. Thank you also to all the volunteers and board members who came out to support us, and to Tom Miller for presenting this year's awards.

Congratulations to our winners:

Closest to the pin:  Devin Cundall
Longest Drive: Guy Land

First Place, scoring 57= Robert butler, Hubie Smith, Scott Sanderson and Glenn Tackett

Second Place, scoring 63 and winning by scorecard playoff: George Wollas, Timothy Crabtree, Frank Jones, and Olliver Talley *we should also note that this team won 2nd place for the 2nd year in a row!
Third Place, scoring 63 and also winning by scorecard playoff: Larry Dillingham, Melvin Spain, Chuck Gordon and Kristi McLelland

Devin wins the team autographed hockey stick  2nd place- George Wollas team  1st place team

The 180 Curriculum is now printed, bound, and ready to be purchased for use by other organizations!
180 printed curriculum- 1st quarterIt's been years in the making, but just as fine wine isn't made overnight (yes, that's why there are grapes and wine on the cover), the printed and bound version of the 180 Program's Curriculum is the product of years of refining and improving.

Reaching single moms all over the country has long been a dream and goal of Against the Grain, and it is with great excitement that we announce the 1st quarter of the 180 Program curriculum is ready for distribution to other organizations interested in mentoring single mothers.

Having the proven curriculum ready to distribute means churches and other community organizations are now able to follow a proven path and begin their own 180 Program, mentoring moms in their community.

Thank you to Sir Speedy Printing for making this possible!

Congratulations, Rob & Meredith!

PR pack from 2010 Columbia State Mass Comm class

Against the Grain was recently honored by a group of women from the Mass Communications class at Columbia State College.

Leslie, Laura and Ginny put together a marketing campaign for AtG that is awesome! They designed T-shirts, travel mugs and other promo items, along with a digital Media kit and PR Plan. Thank you for being such an incredible (and perfectly timed!) blessing!

Volunteer Spotlight
Bob StrachanDid you know that every week we have volunteers who meet during the school day with the children of 180 moms? These "study buddies" give 30 minutes of their week to connect with the child and encourage them in both academics and life skills. So often the relationship and encouragement is as beneficial as the extra tutoring.  Bob Strachan is one of our study buddies and he has been meeting with his "buddy" every week since the beginning of the school year. We appreciate Bob and the relationship that he has built with Troyce- after speaking to both Troyce and Bob, we're not sure who looks forward to Tuesdays the most!

Tara Wihelm If  you spend any time around Tara Wilhelm, you know her passion for teaching preschool children is only matched by her commitment to the children of Against the Grain. Tara is one of the many team leaders for the 180 Kids Program that meets once/month. Tara's smile and her enthusiasm are contagious and we look forward to seeing her every month!

Thank you to Bob, Tara and ALL the volunteers who give part of their time to connect with the families of Against the Grain. We are so blessed to have the support of some of the best volunteers in TN! Check out our website to download the Volunteer Manual and see the many opportunities to impact families caught in negative generational cycles. Even if you're not able to connect on a personal level, as you can see from the prize won by Rob & Meredith (nominated as a surprise by a volunteer), the PR & media kit from Columbia State, the community support of the golf tournament and so many other ways we are blessed, Against the Grain relies upon volunteers for nearly every aspect of our organization.

Please visit www.atghope.org or email carmen@atghope.org to learn how you can join Bob, Tara, and the HUNDREDS of other volunteers who allow us to make a difference in the lives of single mothers and their children EVERY DAY!

"Incredible Baby Shower" Reveals INCREDIBLE Need for AtG's 180 Program!
2010 baby shower logo

On April 29, AtG participated in the Incredible Baby Shower in Nashville. This event was held at Tennessee State University's Gentry Field House and reached out to pregnant women in Middle Tennessee by providing information on healthy pregnancies and parenting. The AtG booth had a line over 40 feet long and we gave away seven tubs of pajamas. The best guess is that 750 young mothers came through the event and approximately 95% of them were single mothers.

We had 67 women sign up asking for more information about the 180 Program and gave away an additional 49 brochures to young ladies who wanted to contact us later. We need mentors who are willing to walk with a young mother for one year and lead her through the 180 curriculum.

For more information or to sign up to be mentor contact Carmen Powell at carmen@atghope.org.
