March 2010
Issue #2

Soccer BallsDear LUYSA Member,

TopPageWe hope you enjoyed the first issue of our LUYSA newsletter, The GoalPost.  We received many positive emails from our membership and hope you continue to find it educational and enjoyable.

In this second issue you will find two articles from our Technical Head Coach, Mark Parker and one from our Director of Mini Soccer, Scott Moye.   We have also included revised information about our 2010 Spring Player Development Program, the dates for our upcoming 2010 Fall Tryouts and information about the upcoming Mini World Cup Tournament.  And, like the last issue, don't forget to check out our 'Spotlight' section where you can read about some of our LUYSA members.

We would love to hear from you!  Tell us what you would like to see in upcoming issues.  Send your comments, feedback, and ideas to info@luysa.com.

Mark ParkerNot using the terms, "recycled material", I have decided this month to simply re-publish a document I wrote some months back for the Canadian soccer monthly magazine "Inside Soccer".  Although some of you may have already read this, I may add I did get some good response and admittedly I did get some hate mail. I hope you enjoy...

I still regard myself as a relative "newbie" in Canada when it comes to the understanding of parental involvement within youth soccer. Coming from a country with a firm professional club structure in place, I was somewhat surprised at the level of responsibility parents have here in Canada, and British Columbia.

The parent involvement has such a wide spectrum of activities; many positive and, unfortunately, some negative. Sadly the negative aspects hinder player and coach development.

Scott Moye11 Things I Learned Coaching 8 Year Olds

1)  Soon after your first practice, thinking of yourself as "Brave" and "Generous" for volunteering, will be replaced with thoughts of "I should be committed" and "No one warned me"

2)  The day after Halloween in the BEST day for practice. Really. I promise.

3)  The first thing you will do after your first practice after being volun-told you were coach, is call your OWN Dad or Mom, and THANK THEM PROFUSELY for all the years of stress you just realized you caused them.

Sunscreen And Water!
By Mark Parker

SunscreenWow, how quick times goes by, the fall winter season is almost over, some teams have in fact completed their season and are know looking at some rest and recovery prior to the start of the spring program. I would like to touch on two areas that are not directly related to the technical side of the game, but they both do have an affect on how well one participates during training and games - they would be the sun (heat) and hydration.

Stainless Steel Water HolderSpring is just around the corner and the thought of playing and coaching soccer in the sun is really one that I can relate to, .... and very much look forward to I might add! Growing up in the southern hemisphere I was always reminded of two things by my mother when heading outside - sunscreen and water!

Spring Has Arrived In Langley
The 2010 Spring Player Development Program is OPEN for Registration
Soccer ball grass
After consultation with the membership and taking the current economic climate into consideration, Langley United Youth Soccer Association have decided that the appropriate decision at this time is to revise the planned spring player development program. This revision will only affect the age groups born in 1999, 1998, 1997, 1996 and 1995 (U11-U15) that had been planned to do extensive travel. The revised program will be more inclusive and place less of a financial burden on families but equal in quality.

Although we recognize it will be disappointing not to undertake an extensive travel program with the teams, we understand the situation and will move forward with the focus on development.

Help Wanted

Volunteer Coordinator for Field Lining Aspects of LUYSA

Volunteer Job Description Includes:
  • Coordination of initial dimensioning and setup for all lined fields used by LUYSA for the season.
  • Coordination of dimensioning and setup for any additional fields that become available over the season.
  • Coordination of purchase of paint for lining season (2 - 3 orders per season).
  • Locate and allocate line painting staff for each of the fields used by the club.
  • Distribution of paint to line painters over the season
  • Distribution and collection of paint equipment at the start and end of season.
  • Coordination of invoices and confirmation of payment with club and line painters.
  • Liaison with LFC to distribute coverage of fields amongst the two clubs.
  • Liaison with Director of Fields
  • Liaison with Director of Officials.
  • Liaison with Club financer
  • Liaison with Club Administrator

This is a great position for someone that wants to become involved with the club with an interest towards understanding more about the fields that LUYSA uses over the seasons of play. The initial start-up of the season is the busiest time for this position. Once the fields have been established, the demands on the person involved is greatly reduced. The position becomes one of maintenance and ensuring that the fields are being painted and the workers are getting paid for their work.

The ideal candidate would come from the younger age groups in hopes of retaining the position for several years for continuity.

If anyone has any questions about the position, please email Martin Middleton, LUYSA 3rd VP.

 Treasurer

We are all aware of the stresses and pressure that comes with being the treasurer of a non-profit organization, why did you want to take on this responsibility?  I love the game of soccer and love living in Langley. If this is my part to give back to the game and our community I'm more than happy to do it.

Obviously being the money keeper of LUYSA takes up a lot of personal time, if you had this time to yourself what would you be doing?  Without a doubt spending more time with my family. That, and doing more recreational sporting activities. Skiing, golf, hockey, soccer, etc. - You name it, I love to play it.
