Treatment Update - Scan Report
Scans Show No Cancer!

Adam just finished with his most recent scans, the first since surgery and a month of grueling radiation treatments. The great news - the MRI, Bone Scans and PET Scan show a resolution of the existing sites and nothing new has popped up. There is no evidence of disease.

It's a time for celebration and a time to be thankful.

Our family sincerely wants to thank everyone for your support, well wishes, and prayers. This has been a long road, and not an easy journey. Knowing there are so many people out there routing for Adam, has helped immensely.

Of course, Adam's journey is far from over. Rhabdo is an invasive cancer, one that lives microscopically in your system. He still has many months of treatment ahead. The experts at Sloan have developed a treatment plan to keep attacking the Rhabdo before it can attack him.

The battle continues. But today, we celebrate!

Treatment Update
Chemo Postponed for Five Weeks!

Until this past Monday, there had been nothing to report. Each week Adam geared up for the next round of chemo, and each week he learned his levels were simply too low to start back on his regimen.

Remember that not everyone gets the same chemo drugs. Chemo for some cancers may be much stronger and cause more side effects than chemo for other cancers. Also, everybody is different. Overall health and fitness will affect how a body reacts to chemo.

For Adam, his overall fitness and positive attitude has contributed to a quick recovery from each treatment. However, the effects of chemo are cumulative. Between the chemo treatments and the extensive radiation over a month, his body was simply tired. His platelets were not returning to adequate levels as fast. Although not thrilled with the delay, Dr. Wexler assured us this is normal. Adam simply needed time to recover, his bone marrow needed to heal and regrow.

Bone marrow is found in the inner part of some bones. It is where all of your blood cells are made (red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets). It is often affected by chemo and can cause blood counts to change. These are the cells in the blood that make up the blood count:

Red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body. During chemo, the bone marrow may not be able to make enough red blood cells. Not having enough red blood cells is called anemia. It can make you feel short of breath, weak, and tired. Anemia can also make your skin, mouth, or gums look pale.

White blood cells fight infection. Chemo lowers white blood cell count, which lowers the ability to fight infections. Thanks to the genius of modern pharmaceuticals and all of your generous donations, we can improve Adam's white blood levels with GCSF shots (a full treatment of shots costs $4500 - and that's our co-payment!).

Adam has also received numerous infusions of blood and platelets. However, platelets only last 48 hours, they aren't stored by the body, they must be grown.

Platelets are tiny pieces that form blood clots to stop bleeding from cuts or bruises. If bone marrow cannot make enough platelets, you may bleed too much, even from small cuts. If your platelet count is low, you will need to be very careful to avoid cuts, bruises, and other injuries. Even brushing teeth could cause bleeding.

Adam's platelet level finally came up to 51 last Monday and he began a new round of chemo. Whoever thought we'd be excited to start chemo!

This round involves wearing an IV backpack 24 hours a day for six days. On Saturday, Adam unplugged himself and started the healing process all over. This time, he gets two weeks to recover and then a new round begins.
