Treatment Update
Radiation Begins

Adam is back at Sloan this week, starting radiation. His body was mapped during a simulation on a previous visit and five tattoos were placed to align the treatment. The tattoos are permanent - but tiny. They look more like a blue freckle. Adam, however, has plans for connecting the dots and making a unique full torso canvas.

On Monday he was fitted into a body cast made during simulation. The entire process was run through verbally with Dr. Wolden and his appoint for treatment is set for 9 am today.

During radiation Adam goes into the treatment room and lays on a table. A giant arm with a disc at the end swings in an arc over the table. In the disc is a hole, like that on an x-ray machine. Within the gap are lead bars that open and close to allow the radiation to pass through. During treatment, the arm moves around your body. Movement during treatment is strongly discouraged.

There is music and nice lighting, in an attempt to make the process less stressful. During treatment there is no pain, actually you can't even feel the radiation. But for Adam, the anxiety producing time is when the red light comes on to warn the techs radiation is in process. Anxiety comes from his physics background and knowledge of radiation.

He is scheduled for 23 days of radiation. The good news, the removal of Carl (the tumor) allowed his radiation treatment to be shortened by five days.

Fatigue and a sunburn are probable side effects for Adam. The effects are cumulative.

In other treatment news, Adam is trying to recover from the last round of chemo. He is probably neutrapenic, so we are all very careful about germs. He has a meeting with his medical team early on Tuesday.

Adam has this week off from chemo, but starts another round next Monday.

It's been a hectic few months and we all appreciate everyone who has reached out, come visit, or simply sent along their regards.

Keep those prayers and positive thoughts coming!

Name That Scar...
War Stories

It's the last week to add your version of the cause of Adam's scar. He's been entertained by the stories posted to his website and wants to name a winner.

Here's just a taste of the postings:

"You were playing with orphans in Nigeria when a large cosmic ray shower ushered up a lightning storm. The children's life in danger, you dodged lightning bolts while running to a nearby car (or faraday cage) to get them to safety. After saving the orphans, you heard the faint sound of meowing kittens, who were in a box under a burning tree (ignited by the frequent lightning). Just as you were picking up the box of kittens, the tree started to fall. As you sprinted away, the tree had just so happened to be stuffed with gunpowder, for an illegal gunpowder smuggling business. Therefore, it exploded, shooting a piece of extra sharp bark from the trunk across your back as you protected the kittens. You saved the kittens, and caught the illegal smugglers. Effectively saving the day." Oma

"The scar actually came from when you jumped through the window of a burning building right before it exploded in order to save a gold plated deck of cards. And a box of kittens (of course)." Megan

"It's a hidden compartment." Seal

Visit www.adamlamson.com and enter your version of what happened to produce the scar on his side. The incision for surgery left a 12 inch crescent shaped scar on his right side. We'd love to hear your version of what caused the scar. The winning story, chosen by Adam, will be the one he tells from here forward and also receive a candy bag from Dylan's Candy Bar in NYC. The winner will be chosen on April 1st.
