MIXING SKIN TONES AND THE PERFECT PALETTE

When students complain about mixing colors, the problem is usually very simple...too many choices, too many colors on their palette! Keep it simple especially when you are first learning to paint. Here is a renaissance palette that will eliminate frustration:
1. Titanium or Lead White
2. Yellow Ochre (not too dark)
3. Vermillion (not too orange and not too dark red)
4. Ivory Black

Thats it. Pretend you are at a make-up counter and you are trying to find the perfect tone (sorry guys). For cacassion skin- Start with a bit of ochre, a tiny bit of vermillion, white and a hint of black. Black helps to take the "orangy" tone away.
For African or darker skin, start with vermillion, black and a touch of white. If the skin is more yellow add ochre.
If you stick with this basic palette and practice mixing out all the possible tints and shades and what happens when you mix them together-you will be so surprised at the range you can achieve.

HOW TO PAINT AN EYE (part 1)

eye-heatherThe biggest mistake my students make in our Portrait Painting class when painting an eye, is that they try to illustrate and dissect all the parts of the iris, pupil, etc instead of painting it as a whole. Let me explain:
1. Paint out the entire eye socket with a dark color (Transparent red oxide and ultramarine blue)--think of a skeleton and the cavity of the eye socket.
2. Paint around the eye leaving the dark color as the line of the lid. A simple stroke of a a mid value will describe the eye lid., and continue underneath the eye and surrounding area.
3. Since the eyeball and eye are already almost black, let that be the dark part of the iris. Simply mix the eye color and place your brush on the inside of the cirlce.
4. The whites of the eye are never white! Use a muddy skin tone with either a hint of black or a hint of blue. Start darker than you think. Light usually hits one side of the eye stronger than the other

We just finished our first DVD on painting Portraits. It's a 4 hour program -live demo and is packed with painting tips and lessons. I made it out of frustration-my students were not progressing as I thought they should so I decided to put the instruction on DVD. I made them watch it before class and I was shocked at their instant progress. Hmm. "They'll listen to the TV but not me."

Clouds Got in My Way...(part 1)
So you want to paint clouds?
October-skiesThe first thing to remember about clouds is that you are painting air. Air has no real form and although your photographs may show a hard edge of white, I am here to tell you that photographs lie! If you want your cloud paintings to be believable, every part of the sky needs to be wet with paint in order to achieve that wispy elegance of water vapors in the sky called clouds. Also, colors will vary and be very subtle. Try using a variety of closely relate tones in your clouds. For example if you see gold, vary it in places to a little warmer vermilion and pinks. This will keep it painterly and not boring. The sky transitions from the horizon line up and depending on the time of day, will never be the same color or value at top as it is at the horizon.
