What does that Part do on #1352?
Trailing Truck Booster
Trailing Truck Booster similar to #1352's |
We'll try to share a few technical tidbits about steam locomotive 1352 from time to time in our newsletters, so this time let's talk about steam locomotive boosters. A booster on a steam locomotive is a small steam engine used to add pulling power to the locomotive at low speed. This was generally used to help start a heavy train. In the case of 1352, the booster is integrated into the locomotive's trailing truck, which is the axle located under the cab. Steam is fed to the booster engine while starting a train, adding another 10,000 lbs of tractive effort to get the train moving. The booster cuts out at around 10 - 15 miles per hour, and after that it is simply along for the ride. Many other steam locomotives were equipped with booster engines on their trailing trucks, and a few even had the booster integrated into one of the tender trucks.
