Board Meetings:
For your information, UUC board meetings are convened on the Third Wednesday of each month. The agenda is put together by Board officers and the Finance chairperson at the executive committee meeting on the second Wednesday of the month. Items to be included for the Board's consideration, should be sent using the Board application Form in plenty of time to Susan Hegner, or to the Bill Norsworthy, chair of the Leadership Coordinating Counsel .
Board President: The Board has fiduciary responsibility for UUC activities, programs and finances and our dedicated board officers and trustees have the responsibility of setting UUC policies so that our administration process is clear and efficient. As time permits, at each board meeting we intend to have an open discussion around a specific topic. At the June Board meeting we asked ourselves: UUC Calendar - it is focused on the UUC Vision and mission? The Board discussed the current process for adding events to the calendar and asked if we need to be more focused? Should we limit the number activities each month? How does the expense of building use factor into event planning? What criteria is applied when a committee, individual member, or outside organization apply to use the building? To answer these and other questions a small task force was charged with the responsibility of writing a calendar policy which we will be discussing at the next board meeting. If f you have suggestions, please contact me . Susan Hegner

|
Friday August 10
6:30 pm
Social Hall
Everyone will enjoy this movie. More of an adult film than a family film. It takes place in a condom factory. IT'S IMPORTANT to RSVP to Joe Weinstein or Lynette Wood so that we don't end up with a potluck dinner with five dozen deviled eggs! It is OK to come at the last minute with a $5 donation. |

| | The Gang of Four | Hat's off to our very own UUC demolition team - Bill Norsworthy, Carl Hansen, Earl Kipka, and Greg Smith. They single (quad-ED) handedly took down and removed the badly damaged playground equipment. Thank you on behalf of all at UUC, especially the children, who now have a safe, clean playground on which to play. This work was thankfully completed in time for the start of the new Religious Enrichment year on Sunday, August 19th. |

Economic Justice Last Sunday of School Supplies Drive
On August 8th our friends at the Hispanic Outreach center are hosting a "Back to School" supplies give away. Local attorneys are contributing back packets to the children and we are collecting school supplies to fill the back packs. Stop at the many back to school sales and buy some notebooks, pencils, pens or any other school supplies and bring them to the UUC. The drive ends this Sunday, Aug 5th! More supplies are needed. Let's work together to insure that every child in our community starts school on a positive note.
Minimum Wage
July 24th was the anniversary of the last minimum wage increase. UUA Justice Action Network is asking people to urge their federal legislators to increase the minimum wage and advocate for working families. The minimum wage has not been raised since 2009! The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour and doesn't support working families in America. All faith traditions affirm the dignity of work-jobs providing the means to live safely and comfortably. It's time we raise the federal minimum wage. Putting money back into the pockets of America's workers is the right thing to do for the economy and workers. If the federal minimum wage kept up with inflation during the last 40 years, it would be $10.55. General Assembly this year had Kim Bobo, Executive Director of IWJ, speak about wage theft and vulnerable workers, including migrant workers. To see this presentation click here.

Economic Justice Team Meeting
Next meeting of the EJT will be on Tuesday, August 14th at 10:30. We will be discussing our plans for the coming months as well as several projects already begun. We welcome any person interested in economic justice to join us for the meeting (and for lunch after). |
PUBLICATION DEADLINES OCTAGRAM - WEEKLY EVERY THURSDAY The Octagram is intended to focus on activities taking place at UUC or those of interest to UUC members and friends. Send items in brief with a link to more information to Octagram. PLEASE DO NOT SEND INFORMATION FORMATTED, OR IN A FLIER. Provide text in an email, or as an attached Word file with any pictures/graphics attached to the email. Deadline is 10 a.m. every Wednesday. Prepared by Jeff Anderson, assisted by Leslie Conrad. RIP Gore Vidal. "There is no such thing as a homosexual or a heterosexual person. There are only homo- or heterosexual acts. Most people are a mixture of impulses if not practices." "The American press exists for one purpose only, and that is to convince Americans that they are living in the greatest and most envied country in the history of the world. The Press tells the American people how awful every other country is and how wonderful the United States is and how evil communism is and how happy they should be to have freedom to buy seven different sorts of detergent."
"Anyone who sings about love and harmony and life [John Lennon] is dangerous to someone who sings about death and killing and subduing [Nixon]"
"Any American who is prepared to run for president should automatically by definition be disqualified from ever doing so."
"The corporate grip on opinion in the United States is one of the wonders of the Western world. No First World country has ever managed to eliminate so entirely from its media all objectivity - much less dissent."
"There is only one party in the United States, the Property Party ... and it has two right wings: Republican and Democrat. Republicans are a bit stupider, more rigid, more doctrinaire in their laissez-faire capitalism than the Democrats, who are cuter, prettier, a bit more corrupt - until recently ... and more willing than the Republicans to make small adjustments when the poor, the black, the anti-imperialists get out of hand. But, essentially, there is no difference between the two parties."
It is "the land of the dull and the home of the literal."
"We should stop going around babbling about how we're the greatest democracy on earth, when we're not even a democracy. We are a sort of militarized republic."
