About Sunday's Service
As a Buddhist, one way to contemplate liberation from suffering is through understanding what is "enough." What level of riches, happiness, security, and peace will lead to spiritual freedom?
Marty is a fifth-generation native Floridian who is completing his second year in his second career - teaching struggling readers at the secondary level. He has been a Unitarian Universalist for ten years and a member of UUC for three years. | |

Green Team Meeting
The next meeting will be on Saturday, August 18th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Hands Across The Sands Save the date: Saturday, August 4th. Another "Hands Across the Sands" event will be held at beaches all along the coast to protest proposed oil drilling. Watch for, or plan, an event at your local beach. What Lies Ahead Watch for up-coming workshops this fall: UU Ministry for the Earth Environmental Workshop and "Trash to Treasure," a light-hearted workshop where you can learn how to make gifts and wrappings from up-cycled or recycled materials. Dates will be announced shortly. Economic Justice School Supplies Drive Begins
Our friends at the Hispanic Outreach center are hosting a "Back to School" supplies give away in mid August. Local attorneys are contributing back packs to the children, and we are collecting school supplies to fill the back packs. So, stop at the many back to school sales and buy some notebooks, pencils, pens or any other school supplies and bring them to the Social Justice table after service, or drop them at the UUC office, Tues-Fri, 9 a.m. - noon. Let's work together to insure that every child in our community starts school on a positive note!
Minimum Wage
July 24th was the anniversary of the last minimum wage increase. UUA Justice Action Network is asking people to urge their federal legislators to increase the minimum wage and advocate for working families. The minimum wage has not been raised since 2009! The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour and doesn't support working families in America. All faith traditions affirm the dignity of work-jobs providing the means to live safely and comfortably. It's time we raise the federal minimum wage. Putting money back into the pockets of America's workers is the right thing to do for the economy and workers. If the federal minimum wage kept up with inflation during the last 40 years, it would be $10.55. General Assembly this year had Kim Bobo, Executive Director of IWJ, speak about wage theft and vulnerable workers, including migrant workers. To see this presentation click here.
Vision Screenings
Prevent Blindness Florida will be offering a free vision screening for children and adults on Friday, August 3rd at the MLK Health Center at 205 Martin Luther King N., St. Petersburg. No appointment is necessary and, for those who qualify, glasses and exams will be provided. Please let anyone you know who might need it about this valuable service.
Voter Initiative Volunteers Needed
If you are interested in helping register voters for the next election, please come to the Social Justice Table next week. We should have definite plans for training a team of UUC people by then. People who have signed up already will be informed.
Economic Justice Team Meeting
Next meeting of the EJT will be on Tuesday, August 14th at 10:30. We will be discussing our plans for the coming months as well as several projects already begun. We welcome any person interested in economic justice to join us for the meeting (and for lunch after). |
PUBLICATION DEADLINES OCTAGRAM - WEEKLY EVERY THURSDAY The Octagram is intended to focus on activities taking place at UUC or those of interest to UUC members and friends. Send items in brief with a link to more information to Octagram. PLEASE DO NOT SEND INFORMATION FORMATTED, OR IN A FLIER. Provide text in an email, or as an attached Word file with any pictures/graphics attached to the email. Deadline is 10 a.m. every Wednesday. Prepared by Jeff Anderson, assisted by Leslie Conrad. I read this week where Mike Huckabee is calling for a Chik-Fil-A appreciation day because he feels haters have been hating too much on the multi-million dollar company. I don't hate I just don't let them have any of my money, which, last I checked, was still a right I have. But having said that, I do want folks to know that Office Depot is partnering with the Born This Way Foundation to fund some efforts to spread the word of love and tolerance to communities everywhere especially to chldren. Just sayin'. ORDER OF SERVICE/ANNOUNCEMENTS - WEEKLY EVERY SUNDAY SERVICE: Deadline is 6 p.m. every Wednesday. Send appropriate items to Order of Service/Announcements. Prepared by Pat St. Clair. ITEMS RECEIVED AFTER THE DEADLINES WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE FOLLOWING PUBLICATION, IF APPLICABLE. Octagram headline artwork of the UUC courtyard pond by Lynette Wood. |
