 About Sunday's Service

Rev. Meyer will evoke the welcome which all creation receives and ask about what it means to be welcomed. As a child of immigrants and a spiritual immigrant, he will explore what it means to identify as an immigrant - that indeed we all may be children of immigrants and spiritual immigrants to one degree or another.

The Rev. Russell L. Meyer serves as the Executive Director of the Florida Council of Churches and as Consultant for Communications & Ecumenism for Bishop Benoway of the Florida-Bahamas Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. A graduate of Baker University (Kansas), with a Masters of Divinity from the Yale Divinity School, he is currently completing a Doctor of Ministry at Wesley Theological Seminary (DC) in Ecumenism and Interreligious Relations. His passions include support for farmworkers, welcome for immigrants, protection of creation and dismantling undue and overbearing privilege in society. He understands God as that which generates creation and invites it to participate fully in the conversation which is the Godhead.

Pianist Linda Jones, will be playing Girl with the Flaxen Hair by Claude Debussy, Siciliano by J.S.Bach (arr. Wilhelm Kempff), Songs Without Words, Op.85. No.4 by Felix Mendelssohn, and Minuet in B Flat Major by W. A. Mozart.

This is Share the Plate Sunday and this week our recipient is Heifer International

Justice GA at UUC

Not going to the GA this year? Don't despair. Some of the highlights of the GA will be shown in the Octagon June 21, June 22, June 23 and June 24th. Some of these events will be time delayed and others will be live streamed. Join the fun and experience the excitement of the GA on the big screen. Stop by the octagon during the times indicated below:

Thursday June 21, 7 PM-We will be viewing the opening Celebration that actually will have taken place Wednesday night. This is a joyful, worshipful opening celebration with inspirational music and speakers. The opening celebration sets the tone for the whole GA.

Friday June 22 , 8 PM-We will be viewing the live stream of the Service of the Living Tradition. The sermon will be given by Rev. Karen I. Tse.

Saturday June 23, 8 PM-The Ware Lecture will be viewed. This year the Ware Lecturer is NPR broadcaster Maria Hinojosa.

Sunday June 24-After Sunday service at UUC, worship again at the GA Sunday worship being shown in the Octagon. The Sunday worship is always incredible. You will not want to miss it!

Environmental Justice

We are a Green Sanctuary
UUC is now the proud recipient of the official signed and framed certificate proclaiming our Green Sanctuary status. Thanks to all who have helped in this endeavor. Keep up the good work.

Green Team in Action
The Environmental Justice Team and the Property Committee are working closely together on several projects including an inventory of UUC and measuring KwH usage of our small appliances. We are also working with the Grounds Clean-up Crew, headed by Bill Norsworthy, to plan the next clean-up on September 8th.  We are also engaged in further exploration of eco-friendly purchases for UUC.

Dump the Pump Lunch
Several members of the Environmental Justice/Green Team attended a meeting of the PSTA Board on Mon., June 18th, where transportation plans for Pinellas County were presented. Increased use of public transit conserves energy by decreasing the use of individual passenger vehicles. PSTA will be presenting their plans at neighborhood meetings, seeking public input and support. Look for one happening near you. Thanks to Phil Compton and the Sierra Club for organizing the large turn-out Monday and providing an excellent lunch.

Revenge of the Electric Vehicle
If you missed the film "Revenge of the Electric Vehicle" when it was shown at UUC, it will be shown Thursday, June 21st at Studio 620 in St Petersburg at 6:30 p.m. Three different electric vehicles will be available for inspection prior to the film. Again, thanks to the Sierra Club for making this film available.

Economic Justice

Planning Meeting

The Economic Justice Team will be having a planning meeting for our next year of work. Anyone interested in joining the team is invited to attend this meeting.
It will be held: Tuesday morning, June 26th at 10:30. If you have any questions please contact Donna Polhamus at 727-286-7260 or e-mail

Pinellas Safe Harbor Tour and Presentation

Please join us to tour Pinellas Safe Harbor, a local homeless shelter, and to present the collected underwear and $1000 check on June 22nd. We will be leaving the UUC parking lot at 10:30 and should be back around noon. The UUC Social Justice Council is considering building a closer relationship with this shelter. If this is a project you might be interested in, please come to the tour. Sign up for the tour at the Social Justice table after the service, or contact Linda Stoller at 442-3551.

Today is the Summer Solstice and for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere it is the longest day.  Today embrace life with both arms and both legs.  Breathe deep and love long.  As the summer twilight slides down on all sides let us reflect on the joyous circumstance of living.  Let us all be thankful for another day on this side of the sod.  Life is like a gift, it's not a gift for that implies sentience bequeathing something to us, but it is like a gift and leaves full of anticipation of what is to come.  We can't wait to open the package of each new day and see the surprises and fun contained within.  Peace and love to all.
