In this month's column, I resurrect a custom from the early years of my ministry - providing an annotated list of titles for summer reading. The following is a list of some of the books I intend to get to this summer as well as ones that I read during the year that deserve special mention.

UUC Social Hall
Come one and all to the Interweave Potluck and Movie night. This month's feature is The Birdcage starring Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, Diane Wiest & Hank Azaria in a hilarious update of La Cage Aux Folles. (My favorite scene is Robin Williams' frantic instructions to a dancer--ED.)
Bring a covered dish, OR $5. Please RSVP by e-mailing Joe Weinstein or call Joe at 813-263-2989. |
Spring Spruce Up Successfull |
 | | Ken Nichols & Jacob Speranza | Last Saturday's work party was very successful. UUC's grounds and buildings look a lot better now, thanks to the work of our tireless volunteer crew. Special recognition goes to Ken Nichols and Jacob Speranza who just became UUC members last week. In addition to these two, we had thirteen other stalwarts: Sue Boone, Bob Buesing, Ray Clayton, Rives Foster, Carl Hansen, Eloise and Jay Hardman, Susan Hegner (your new president), Earl Kipka, Bob Muir, Bill Norsworthy, Joanne Osburn and Frank Tedesco. Their work is much appreciated! Please mark your calendars and join us for our fall event on Sat., Sept 8th. |

PUBLICATION DEADLINES OCTAGRAM - WEEKLY EVERY THURSDAY The Octagram is intended to focus on activities taking place at UUC or those of interest to UUC members and friends. Send items in brief with a link to more information to Octagram. PLEASE DO NOT SEND INFORMATION FORMATTED, OR IN A FLIER. Provide text in an email, or as an attached Word file with any pictures/graphics attached to the email. Deadline is 10 a.m. every Wednesday. Prepared by Jeff Anderson, assisted by Leslie Conrad. Katherine and I had an occasion this past week to watch the old Clint Eastwood favorite The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. While watching this splendid movie, Katherine remarked to me that she had no idea who to root for in this movie since all the lead characters were reprehensible and involved in crime. How true this is, I thought. I suppose that the minor character flaws introduced in more recent movies are not really enough to qualify the characters as anti-heroes. I guess the Golden Age of the anti-hero is behind us now and we like to see more definition of good and evil in movies now. A pity, moral ambiguity is so delightful at times. ORDER OF SERVICE/ANNOUNCEMENTS - WEEKLY EVERY SUNDAY SERVICE: Deadline is 6 p.m. every Wednesday. Send appropriate items to Order of Service/Announcements. Prepared by Pat St. Clair. ITEMS RECEIVED AFTER THE DEADLINES WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE FOLLOWING PUBLICATION, IF APPLICABLE. Octagram headline artwork of the UUC courtyard pond by Lynette Wood. |
