About Sunday's Service

The fifth precept in Buddhism's Eight-fold path is 'right livelihood.' Buddhists interpret this as employment or business that is beneficial to the community as well as the individual. What are we called to be and do in life as individuals? As a religious community?

Social Justice in Action

Bill Dishongh
Bill Dishongh, Social Justice Chair
The principle of the inherent worth and dignity of every person drives our congregation to support, with our time, our talent and our treasure, various projects that lift up our brothers and sisters that are less fortunate than we.

Lynda Gurvitz, PhD
An update on Ecstasy Rising, the 2004 documentary by Peter Jennings
Mr. Jennings reported ecstasy (MDMA) as a nightmare for drug controllers in 2002 because of its popularity among young people. Much has changed, owing to the "Rave Act" and the recent need to treat PTSD among soldiers returning from the wars. Dr. Gurvitz is a clinical psychologist, practicing many years in Largo.
Religious Education Happenings
Are you looking for a place where children and youth can ask questions and search for answers? Then UUC is for you! Please join us this Sunday for faith, friendship and fun as our children and youth gain a deeper understanding of Unitarian Universalism together.

Our nursery children (ages 0-3 yrs) will be exploring different jobs and talk about what they want to be when they grow up (to reflect on the May theme of the month: vocation). Doesn't this sound like fun? If you have any dress-up costumes for our littlest UUs that we could borrow for this exercise, we would greatly appreciate it!

Our high school youth group will meet from 12-1pm after the worship service for open discussion.

We can't wait for Sunday!  Please join us!

Volunteers are encouraged! Come be a kid again and have some fun!

The Entire Month of May

T-ShirtThe Economic Justice team is collecting donations of NEW underwear and socks during the month of May for men and women (no children) at the Pinellas Safe Harbor, a homeless shelter located in Clearwater. This is a collaborative community facility that has attracted national attention for innovative services that help homeless people get back on their feet.  When a group of us visited Safe Harbor last year, we became aware of the great need for new items of this sort and how something so simple can provide dignity for the residents. There is a big blue box in the church lobby-let's fill it to the brim!!

Give & Take
Give and Take One
Do you have something you no longer need and would love to pass on or is there something you wish you could get? Give and Take is the perfect site to explore. It can be items such as furniture, tools, etc. or even services you can offer or a service with which you would appreciate someone's help. And the best part is the sharing with other UUs.  Go to the link, view what is available, or fill out the form for something you can offer. Give & Take

Parag

Note:  This event was originally scheduled for May 17.

"There is a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning" .... proclaims Jimmy Buffet in a popular song. Listening to spiritual teachers, reading their books or engaging in uplifting conversations leaves one feeling almost euphoric. But that feeling can be way too short-lived - there is often a chasm between the intellectual grasping of spiritually uplifting concepts and the implementation of them in day-to-day life.

The presenter of this session believes that 'situational equanimity' or 'awareness' or 'enlightenment' - call it what you like - is a natural state of being that is begging to bear fruit from each and every person's consciousness. In this session, the presenter will share techniques used to bring that short-lived state of mind to becoming a part of everyday life.

About The Presenter:

Parag and his family are winter residents of Florida and attend UUC. Born in India, Parag Karkhanis' childhood was seeped in a tradition and culture as old as humanity. He came to the US to finish his education and subsequently settled here.

Economic Justice

This team needs YOU

The volunteer teachers at the UUC Hispanic Preschool Project are looking for some additional people who are interested in helping out this summer. The program is on Thursday morning from 10-11:30. We are working with children age 1-4 years and their moms to help them become familiar with English. It's really fun and no experience is necessary, except a love for young children. If you are interested in finding out more about this community outreach program speak to any of the teachers or contact Linda Stoller at 442-3551.

Well, the annual meeting is upon us.  This should prove to be quite an exciting meeting this year, what with the Strategic Plan being presented and all sorts of other fun stuff planned.  Katherine is now busy hunting for an apartment that will put her close to I-275 when classes in Orlando begin this fall.  I attended my final board meeting last night.  As I finish my brief stint on the board, I welcome Cindi Nohe to the board. I am sure she will provide outstanding service during her tenure.  Also, this is the first anniversary of my editorship of the Octagram and so, since I did not do it the day I took over I will now abuse my position a tiny bit and give a big shout out to my dear friends Lisa Lanser-Rose, Trish Murphy, and Rose DeMoor-Peal.  Hi girls, love you all.
