About Sunday's Service
"Vocation," writes Quaker philosopher Parker Palmer, "at its deepest level is something I can't not do, for reasons I'm unable to explain to anyone else and don't fully understand myself but that are nonetheless compelling." The service will investigate.
The Adult Chorale, directed by Dr. David Katz, with the accompaniment of Linda Jones on piano and Ed Kraemer on drums, will be singing I'm Gonna Ride That Train by Kirby Shaw. Linda and Ed will join Don Ekberg, on bass, for Dave Brubeck's Struttin' and Three To Get Ready, and a piece from Claude Bolling's A La Francaise.
Also this Sunday, we are asking those who can to make a matching special pledge to help UUC meet our goals in the coming year.

A Letter from Your President |
For the past two years we have sought financial commitments from members and friends on Consecration Sunday. You were asked to give from your hearts, and you were very generous in your giving. This year, many have increased their commitments from last year, and a number of new pledges were received. Unfortunately, at this year's Consecration Sunday... Click here to read the rest

The Quaker educator and writer Parker Palmer says that true vocation arises out of our deepest self, our true self, with our unique gifts and capacities, along with our particular limitations, quirks, and growing edges. Real conviction of vocation comes out of this sense of: This is who I am and this is who I am called to be.

| | The Walrus | "When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy'. They told me I didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life." John Lennon
On the First Sunday of the month the children come together in the Maxwell Library from 10:30-11:00 to participate in a worship service designed just for them, so they have an opportunity to "do church" in a meaningful way they can understand.
The Children's Worship Service will focus around the monthly theme of "vocation" or "calling" and is planned and led by our Middle School Class and High School Youth group. Special music provided by Carly Byrd.
Our High School youth group meet from 12-1 after the worship service for open discussion.
We can't wait for Sunday! Please join us!
Volunteers are encouraged! Come be a kid again and have some fun!

The Entire Month of May
The Economic Justice team is collecting donations of NEW underwear and socks during the month of May for men and women (no children) at the Pinellas Safe Harbor, a homeless shelter located in Clearwater. This is a collaborative community facility that has attracted national attention for innovative services that help homeless people get back on their feet. Why underwear, you ask? Because even we who are committed thrift store shoppers are not apt to buy "used" underwear and socks. When a group of us visited Safe Harbor last year, we became aware of the great need for new items of this sort and how something so simple can provide dignity for the residents. There is a big blue box in the church lobby-let's fill it to the brim!! |

Clara Morabito we miss you!
|
The following is a note from Clara regarding her Sunday send off. I don't know about you but I miss her already.
On Friday, May 4, I will be in an Amtrak roomette, heading for my new home in NJ.
I was overwhelmed at yesterday's service by the way UUC congregants gave me such a wonderful sendoff after being a member for 15 years: Abhi asking me to light the chalice, Abhi's wish that I give my loving goodbye in a two-minute talk, the large sign in the lobby of the Social Hall expressing the feelings about my leaving, the many messages in a unique card wishing me well, a beautiful photograph from Susan Golden followed by countless more messages, a special drawing from UUC's artist Lynette, Bobbie Watson's acknowledgment at the mic in the Social Hall of our very special friendship over the years, and last but not least, the many hugs from so many of you.
In the Social Hall, I was asked for the title of the book that I mentioned in my talk at the service. It is THANKS! How Practicing Gratitude Can Make You Happier, by Robert A. Emmons, Ph.D., a professor of Psychology at the University of California at Davis.
It was a sendoff that will live in my heart forever. I love you all!

Do You Like Listening To Poetry?
| | One of the books chosen by the group. |
Friday May 11th and Friday May 18th, we will be taking turns reciting poetry which we have selected and practiced reading ahead of time. So, if you would like to join us, please bring a poetry book with you, of your choosing, and be prepared to recite a poem or two from it, which you have found enjoyable to read. We have done this on occasion and found it to be very enjoyable. We meet every Friday 10:00-11:30 am in the Chorale Room of the UUC Octagon. |

Notes from the Front Office
Closet Sale
| | For Sale: One Husband, slightly used. |
We're having a "Closet Sale" on Sunday, May 13th after services in the Social Hall. It's like a garage sale, except UUC doesn't have a garage. However, we have been busy cleaning out the UUC closets and have unearthed a treasure trove of items that we just don't have a use for or the room to store them at UUC. However, these items may be just what you have been needing in your home, office or YOUR closet. Find great bargains on a varied collection of odds and ends. The RE department and the Rissho Kosei-kai Buddhists will also be contributing items for sale.
Is Thomas Crown a UU?
Carl Hansen generously purchased and then donated a very beautiful framed painting of a scene depicting many leaders of many different faiths in communion with each other. The painting was hung in the sanctuary lobby just to the right of the doors over the upholstered bench. Well, it has gone missing, and we can't seem to find it...anywhere, we have even checked the closets. If you have any information regarding where the painting is please call the office at 727-531-7704.
Lost & Found
Pease check the front office for any items you may have lost during the year. At the end of May, all Lost & Found items are donated to charity.
We have eye glasses, car keys, clothing, paintings that used to hang in the lobby, etc. Please check to see if any of these are yours.
We Need Help
Have nothing to do on Fridays during the long, hot days of summer? Work in an air conditioned office for praise and gratitude from your fellow UU's!
The front office needs someone to assist the regular volunteer on Fridays for seven weeks during the summer, June 19-August 10. The hours are from 10am -12noon, the main duties are copying and assembling packets, and training will be provided. If you are interested in seven weeks of fun and frolic, please contact Barbara Brandt at 727-733-7855 or e-mail.

Garden Project
Jungle Jay harvested a dozen crook-neck squash, 'bout a half pound of green beans, yellow and green bell peppers and three kohlrabi from the permie-demo garden at UUC. He spread about five cubic yards of oak leaves at a foot deep over more than 1000 square feet of unused turf and weeds and planted three mounds of cantelope to range across it (immune to the mower). If you are interested in the Garden Project, please contact "JungleJay" and/or attend the next Green Team Meeting on Saturday, May 19th, as we make future plans.
