On Friday, April 13th, we begin discussing Thunderstruck by Erik Larson. In Thunderstruck, Erik Larson tells the interwoven stories of two men - Hawley Crippen, a very unlikely murderer, and Guglielmo Marconi, the obsessive creator of a seemingly supernatural means of communication - whose lives intersect during one of the greatest criminal chases of all time.
Set in Edwardian London and on the stormy coasts of Cornwall, Cape Cod, and Nova Scotia, Thunderstruck evokes the dynamism of those years when great shipping companies competed to build the biggest, fastest ocean liners, scientific advances dazzled the public with visions of a world transformed, and the rich outdid one another with ostentatious displays of wealth. Against this background, Marconi races against incredible odds and relentless skepticism to perfect his invention: the wireless, a prime catalyst for the emergence of the world we know today. Meanwhile, Crippen, "the kindest of men," nearly commits the perfect crime.
Before attending the April 13th session, please read to page 104 or to the 27% point on Kindle. |

Build Your Own Theology is Back!
Thursdays, April 5, 12, 19, 7-9 pm
15-20 particiants
Fee: $10.00 |
Based on the assumption that everyone is their own theologian, this classic UU adult enrichment program invites participants to develop their own personal belief statements (credos). Each session will focus on various theological questions to help participants grow in their ability to understand and articulate their own belief systems. Presented by Rev. Abhi. Register by calling the office during normal business hours or click here. (This is another dynamite class offered by Adult RE and UUC. I took this a few years ago and it was quite an experience. It helped a radical atheist such as me to articulate my ideas about religion and spirituality.--Ed) |

Rev. Abhi and the Welcoming Committee will be offering an introduction to Unitarian Universalism called New UU. The program addresses the needs of newcomers to know more about who we are and what we believe and gives them the opportunity to examine their own personal stories in the light of our UU traditions and heritage. The last session will be offered on Thursday, March 29th, 7-9 p.m., in the Patio Room. This enlightening and informative program is free and open to all. Click Here to register or e-mail Cindi. |

PUBLICATION DEADLINES OCTAGRAM - WEEKLY EVERY THURSDAY The Octagram is intended to focus on activities taking place at UUC or those of interest to UUC members and friends. Send items in brief with a link to more information to Octagram. PLEASE DO NOT SEND INFORMATION FORMATTED, OR IN A FLIER. Provide text in an email, or as an attached Word file with any pictures/graphics attached to the email. Deadline is 10 a.m. every Wednesday. Prepared by Jeff Anderson, assisted by Leslie Conrad. What a Wednesday this was. On the way home from work Wednesday afternoon, I stopped and picked up some groceries at my local Publix (but I do not buy tomatos there). I decided to buy a card for Katherine as it had been a while since I surprised her with an "I love you" card. So I browsed and found the one I wanted and took it home and wrote in it and closed the envelope and put her name on it. When she came home she was delighted to see the envelope on the table. Upon opening it she started laughing and wouldn't stop. I wondered why my expression of love was being treated as comic relief. She was finally able to tell me that she stopped at Publix as well and decided to get me a card. She wound up purchasing the same card I bought. So I guess great minds think alike. Or maybe the bond between us is very deep. Yesterday was also the 71st anniversary of the day Virginia Woolf committed suicide. So last night I let my inner literary geek out for a stroll and watched The Hours which depicts that event in its opening and closing scenes. Have a great week. ORDER OF SERVICE/ANNOUNCEMENTS - WEEKLY EVERY SUNDAY SERVICE: Deadline is 6 p.m. every Wednesday. Send appropriate items to Order of Service/Announcements. Prepared by Pat St. Clair. ITEMS RECEIVED AFTER THE DEADLINES WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE FOLLOWING PUBLICATION, IF APPLICABLE. Octagram headline artwork of the UUC courtyard pond by Lynette Wood. |
