Greetings!
Where did the summer go? The days are shorter and cooler, and we've already heard one or two people mention the Christmas word! No worries, it's a great time of year to cozy up, dig out our sweaters and fuzzy wool socks, have friends and family over for dinner, and celebrate the fact that, at least here in Victoria, spring isn't far off!
Happy Thanksgiving from all of here at The Good Planet Company!

Hollyhock: antioxidant for the soul
Ian and Alain, co-founders of The Good Planet Company, recently had the good fortune to attend the Social Venture Institute gathering at Hollyhock, which allows socially responsible enterprise leaders to share ideas, improve business and build a stronger sense of community. They had an inspiring time, picked up tons of ideas, and got a real kick out of the Hollyhock retreat itself! Located on the southern tip of Cortes Island, the not-for-profit retreat's mission is to be Canada's leading educational retreat with a mission to inspire, nourish and support people who are out to make the world a better place. If all that sounds a little lofty, and all you want is a few days peace and solitude, you can stay at the retreat, get some great bodywork, do some wonderful kayaking in the shadow of Desolation Sound, eat superb vegetarian food picked from Hollyhock's own garden, and soak up the peaceful ambiance of what Victoria magazine calls an "antioxidant for the soul". It's well worth the drive!

| Memory Foam vs Natural Rubber
Have you ever wondered what the difference is between the two?
There
are advertisements every day extolling the virtues of memory foam
mattresses, but with a little research, some disturbing facts come to
light.
Memory foam mattresses are made of polyurethane foam, a petroleum based
material that emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which can cause
respiratory problems and skin irritation. They also usually contain the
flame retardant polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) which has been
banned in Europe but is still used in Canada. This chemical can
accumulate in fat tissue, blood and breast milk and has been linked to
cancer and nervous-system disorders. Here at The Good Planet Company, we have done our research!
Our mattresses originate from forests and fields, not chemical factories. Our
mattresses are made of the sap from organically grown
rubber trees by a simple, chemical-free process. The sap is collected
and baked into durable pure rubber mattress. No petrochemical additives
are required, so the resulting mattress is VOC-free, durable yet
supremely supportive and comfortable.
Our mattresses are
wrapped in a thin layer of naturally fire-retarding wool (no PBDEs
here!) and finished with a luxurious certified organic cotton ticking. Our mattresses are crafted right here in Canada, and have a proven longevity
of 20-35 years. And at the end of their long life, they are biodegradable!
The best thing of all... comfort. Some
memory foam companies might have you believe that their memory foam
mattresses will soothe your back condition. The opposite is true... once
your body heat warms the foam, you sink right into it... not a recipe
for comfort! Natural rubber on the other hand responds to your body
weight so when you lie on your side, there is more weight at your
shoulders and hips so those points will sink into the mattress while
your lumbar spine is still properly supported. When your spine is
aligned you will reach the deeper levels of sleep and your body can
begin to heal itself.
See for yourself... come in to The Good
Planet Company and try out our five in-store display mattresses. We
think you'll be impressed. |

Giving Back As Canadians, we are fortunate to live in a land of plenty, with a
robust economy, a social safety net and enough food for all
to share. Elsewhere, our brothers and sisters don't all have it so good.
Part of our mission here at The Good Planet Company is to do what we can to help people lead a better quality of life. During 2010, our primary charitable causes have been The Red Cross (especially Haiti and Pakistan) as well as Kiva, which helps entrepreneurs around the globe to build their businesses, in turn helping to feed their families. We encourage our customers and friends to continue to dig deep to help those in need.
