Small Business Week
Oct. 15 - Oct. 19
What is the Chamber Doing This week?
Each year Small Business Week is a time of celebration, learning, and participating in the various events around Kelowna. This year the Chamber has a week full of events.
Monday - Chamber Lunch: Successful Entrepreneurship
Tuesday - Speaker Series: Selling Your Business
Wednesday - Business Excellence Awards - Get your tickets this week
Thursday - Business After Hours at Spider Agile Technology
NEW! Speed Networking - Prior to the Business After Hours at Spider from 4:30 to 5:00 short introductions will be made. Wear your name tag, bring lots of business cards and have a short introduction ready
Friday - Seminar - Power of Engagement: How Small Businesses Win
Learning is a huge part of success, new technologies, easier ways of doing things, or how to solve problems. The Chamber hosts 12 Business After Hour events a year, 30 different learning opportunities and 1 gala evening to celebrate the business community as a whole.
Here is what one member has to say about the Chamber:
"Being new to the Okanagan, as well as starting a new business, we knew we had to get connected with the business community. The Chamber of Commerce was a must for us to start getting our brand of business out into the public. We joined the Chamber long before we even opened our doors for business. By doing so, we were able to take full advantage of cost savings, as well as taking part in networking functions. If I was to go back and do it again, I would have become a member sooner." - Dallas Storey - Owner/Operator Bin There Dump That

How Sponsorship Can Help You Succeed

Sponsorship is often times looked at as an "extra" on the budgets, when in reality it should be a "priority". Sponsorship in the past was something that only large companies could afford - no longer. Once smaller businesses discovered the benefits they saw the increase in business that came from sponsoring events, teams and charitable groups. Smaller companies now find themselves with more clients, cash flow and opportunities due to sponsorship.
Sponsorship does so much for companies - first off the good-will aspect puts your company into the client's mind as having a heart and sharing a value with them. Clients therefore feel more connected and feel like they share an interest with you. It's like when a friend shares the same interests with you - you think of them when planning those activities, or making related purchases.
Businesses get excellent value out of a sponsorship. Go for a sponsorship where you get to speak or present something, that will be the best value for your dollar. The public can then put a face to the logo and the company.
Sponsorship results in more business, more brand awareness, more connections and all of that results in more clients and therefore more profits.

Planning on Selling Your Business?
Prepare to be scrutinized!
Anyone who is contemplating selling their business should start the planning process early in order to maximize the value that a third party will pay. Part of that planning should include readying their business for the purchaser's "due diligence" review. This due diligence usually takes place after signing of a letter of intent or purchase agreement, but before the purchaser becomes legally obligated to complete the transaction. Preparing for the due diligence review will ensure that prospective purchasers are not scared away by any unexpected issues.
As part of this process, a prospective purchaser may want to review some or all of the following:
1. Corporate records, including articles, bylaws and minutes;
2. Documents evidencing securities issuances;
3. Material contracts and client lists;
4. Outstanding or potential litigation;
5. Employment agreements;
6. Financial records and tax filings;
7. Real property rights;
8. Intellectual property rights; and
9. Insurance.

Committees Can Launch Your Career
Committees exist in most organizations and these groups within the chamber are essential to business in Kelowna and BC. The Chamber's committees meet and work with all levels of government. Most recently a resolution was taken to the national level from the Kelowna Chamber. This resolution was passed by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce who will then take it to the federal government to be passed. The laws and regulations of this country are not the ideas of the people in parliament - in actuality ideas for laws start with you, one person on a committee.

Mayor's Message
There's no business like show business
It's an unusual business model, but few other business sectors play so significant a role in bringing people together for an experience that lives on in our collective memory long after the performers have left the stage.
The sum total of those experiences helps shape impressions about our city's cultural character.
The Kelowna Community Theatre celebrated 50 years and was the trailblazer for this city's cultural development. It was the starting point for stagecraft in Kelowna, the progenitor of performance venues, the granddaddy of gathering places.
