API Scores Increase, Signals Narrowing of Achievement Gap

Ravenswood City School District increased its Academic Performance Index score by a substantial 30 points, to 667 from 637, according to 2008-2009 results provided by the state this past month.  The increase indicates improvement from year to year based on scores for each of the District's schools.  A school's API is a number that ranges from 200 to 1000 and is calculated from the results for each school's students on statewide tests. The state has set 800 as the API target for all schools to meet. Notably, increases for the District's black students and Hispanic students were nearly double the state average for those subgroups, which still outpaced growth for white and Asian subgroups statewide.

"The API results also show a slight narrowing of the achievement gap that has historically left Hispanic or Latino and African-American students trailing behind their peers who are white or Asian. I am delighted to see this trend of progress continue," State Superintendent Jack O'Connell said in a statement, as quoted in the Palo Alto Daily News.

Parent Engagement Takes Off at Back to School Events

To encourage deeper parent involvement, REF has offered a $1000 matching grant for parent contributions made at each school.  The response has been overwhelmingly positive, as evidenced by most of the parents attending a recent back to school event at Cesar Chavez Academy who made $10 contributions, raising over $1200.  Those funds, along with the additional REF matching grant, target the classroom at the principal's discretion.
