Andrew Buchanan Students Visit Shook Home
On February 11, 2011, Andrew Buchanan students and their families spent the evening dancing and playing games at Shook Home with the assisted living residents. Each student that attended the dance gave a homemade Valentine Card to the residents. The cards were hand stamped by some of our students during "Stamp Night" the Friday before.
Andrew Buchanan PTA has organized visits to Shook Home for the past two years. Our visits have also included Christmas caroling. In the spring, the residents will visit Buchanan for their musical programs.

CASD Health Services- Mandated Dental Screenings
Important information regarding change to mandated dental screening program:
Beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, the Chambersburg Area School District will switch from a dental hygiene program to a mandated dental screening program.
The mandated dental screening program consists of dental screenings for all students in kindergarten, 3rd grade and 7th grade only.
What changes will teachers notice?
· The dental hygienist will no longer be giving classroom demonstrations or lessons in dental care to the students.
· At the elementary level, only those students in kindergarten and third grade will be given a dental screening if their private dentist has not seen them.
· Seventh grade students were not given dental screenings in the past. Under the mandated dental screening program, a dental professional at some point will screen all seventh grade students who are not seen by their family dentist during the school year.

Scotland Second Graders Celebrate Arbor Day
On Friday, April 29th, the second grade class of teacher Theresa Reichard participated in a tree planting event to celebrate Arbor Day. After reading books about trees and discussing Earth Day with CASD Energy Manager, Connie Kelley, the students worked together to plant an ornamental plum tree purchased at Snavely's Garden Center.

The tree arrived by truck from the Frank J. Schmidt Nursery in Oregon. It should grow to about 14 or 15 feet in height and be visible to students throughout the years as a reminder of their efforts to help promote the benefit of trees in our world.

Guilford Hills PTA Rocks!
In early April, Joann Vessah, Muriel Tukey and Katie Kough attended the annual Pennsylvania State PTA Convention in Scranton, PA.
At the Saturday evening banquet, they accepted the award for the highest increase in male membership. In other words, no other PTA in the entire state signed up more men (percentage, not raw number) from 2010 to 2011 than Guilford Hills.
The PA State PTA reported that their increase (approx. 9%) was higher than the national average. For their efforts they will receive a FREE WatchD.O.G.S renewal kit for next year.
