Word from the Superintendent

Sonnie Bender, one of our veteran employees, recently e-mailed me this story. It's the perfect message as we head into summer and refocus on what's important. I wish you all a healthy, happy, and relaxing summer with the golf balls in your lives.

The Mayonnaise Jar

golf ballA professor stood before his philosophy class with some items in front of him. When class began, he picked up a large empty mayonnaise jar and filled it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured it into the jar. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. The sand filled the rest of the space, and he asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "yes." The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar. The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor, "this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things--God, family, children, health, friends, and favorite passions--things that if everything else were lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the things that matter like your job, house, and car. The sand is everything else: the small stuff.

"If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the pebbles or golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. So play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the dripping tap. Take care of the golf balls first: the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and asked what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple cups of coffee with a friend."

Graduation to Be Broadcast Online

computer screenThis year we are providing a web stream of graduation live on the Internet. The commencement ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. June 11. To view the ceremony, go to chambersburg.k12.pa.us/cashs and click on "Graduation Stream." This should automatically open your media player and provide both the audio and video of graduation. Please note that you will not see anything on the web stream until we are recording live.

District Administrative Reorganization

On Wednesday evening, the board approved a new district administration organizational structure. The full administrative team will be working this summer on building transition plans between and among various divisions so the 2010-2011 school year can begin with a clear direction for everyone.

Coldbrook Closure Made Official

coldbrookOn Wednesday the school board voted unanimously to close Coldbrook at the end of the current school year due to the building's need for $1 million in renovations and the ongoing goal of consolidating the district's older, smaller schools. Students in grades K-4 currently attending Coldbrook will move to Falling Spring and Andrew Buchanan in the fall, while students in grade 5 will move to CAMS.

Teacher Retires with 41 Years of Service

HaferGrandview 3rd grade teacher Charlotte Hafer was recognized at the school board meeting this past week on the eve of her retirement after 41 years as a Chambersburg Area School District teacher. What's even more impressive than Charlotte's long tenure is that she never used a sick day in her 41 years as an educator! We thank Charlotte for her dedication to countless students over the past four decades and wish her the best in whatever adventures are on her horizon.

Class of 2000 Reunion

Members of the CASHS Class of 2000 are reminded that their 10-year reunion will be held Saturday, July 3 from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. in the Orchards Restaurant ballroom. All class members are invited! Questions? E-mail Chris Shively at cmshively@gmail.com.

Athletic Year in Review

sports ballsThis past school year, our athletes were involved in 333 varsity competitions with an overall record of 215 wins, 117 losses, and 1 tie. Nearly 800 students competed in our athletic programs and nabbed five Mid-Penn championships. For a list of sports teams, number of participants, and records, as well as students who qualified for state competitions, see the CASD athletic department report for 2009-2010.

Student Medication Policy Changing

bottle of pillsBeginning with the 2010-2011 school year, no over-the-counter or prescription medications will be administered to students by district nursing staff without an individual medication order from a physician. This means our school nurses' offices will no longer be stocking Tylenol, cough drops, or other medications.

In the past, a local physician would sign a blanket standing order permitting our nursing staff to administer over-the-counter medication to students. Due to liability concerns and the increasingly complex health needs of some students, these standing orders will no longer be in place.

For more information about this change, see this letter to parents and this medication form.

'Live for a Month' in Poverty

open handsYou are invited to enter into the role of a low-income individual and "live for a month" in poverty. This experience, known as The Poverty Simulation, will be hosted by Circles of Support on Tuesday, June 22 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at King Street Church. This event is great for teachers and others involved in working with low-income families.

The simulation includes four 15-minute sessions, each representing one week in which you must provide for your family and maintain your home. This is an opportunity to begin to understand the situations of families living on public assistance or with very little income. Pre-registration is required by visiting www.circlesfranklincounty.org/events.html or calling 263-5060 Ext. 320.

Faust FFA Celebrates Successes

Members of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) at Faust Junior High had a busy 2009-2010, with the students hosting or volunteering at multiple local agricultural activities, tackling state competitions, attending regional events, and more. FFA advisor John Byers has provided this round-up of their year.
