Word from the Superintendent
I strongly urge every Chambersburg area resident to fill out and return your 2010 U.S. census form so we receive our fair share of the more than $3 trillion in state and federal funds allocated based on census data. The goal of the U.S. census is to count all residents living in the United States every 10 years as mandated by the United States Constitution. This data is then used to allocate funds.
If we don't fill out the census forms, we as a community will receive less taxpayer money coming back to Chambersburg than we deserve. As we've seen in the news this week, Franklin County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state. Our schools rely on federal grants to fund programs such as the national school lunch and breakfast programs, special education, safe and drug-free schools, class size reduction, vocational education, English as a Second Language programs, college tuition programs, and Title I resources for our economically disadvantaged students.
Our poverty levels are rising dramatically and now almost 40% of our children qualify for free or reduced lunch. This is higher than it has ever been and we need your help. Please fill out your census form and mail it back today so we receive the funding our children and community deserve.

CASHS Open Forum Scheduled
The CASHS administration will conduct an open forum for parents, students, and community members at 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 29 in the CAMS auditorium. Topics of a brief presentation will include e-learning, workforce development, plans for the future, concepts such as open campus and early college credits, and much more. After the presentation, the forum will be open for questions and comments from the audience for a lively discussion about our high school. |

In a new initiative to highlight school success and student achievement, many of our schools were recognized Wednesday during CASD's 1st Annual Academic Achievement Awards. These awards were based on students' strong performance during last year's PSSA exams (and, in the case of the growth awards, the last three years' exams). Art Show, Musical Performance Planned
Artwork created by Franklin Learning Center students will be showcased at the learning center, 2397 Loop Road, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 15. The pieces were produced this past year and focus on different habitats and media, providing a colorful and educational journey for viewers of all ages. The free exhibit will also feature a musical performance by children's singer and songwriter Woody Wolfe. Wolfe is co-founder of Heart to Hand Ministries, a program providing musical outreach to Pennsylvania children's hospitals, orphaned children, and those with special medical needs. For more information, please contact the Franklin Learning Center at (717) 263-2700. |
Students to Remain at FCCTC
The school board voted on Wednesday to have our Franklin County Career and Technology Center students continue to take their academic classes at FCCTC in 2010-2011 instead of return to CASHS. As part of the decision, the FCCTC Joint Operating Committee agreed on Thursday to cut the rent that Chambersburg pays for its classrooms at the career tech center in half.
The board also voted to proceed with planning for an academic center for Chambersburg students at FCCTC to determine what the center would cost. FCCTC articles of agreement, which were revised and approved, would allow Chambersburg to purchase the land on which to build the academic center. |
Spare Change Makes a Difference
Congratulations to the students and staff at Coldbrook Elementary, who raised $574.54 in pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters in just over three weeks for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society! "I want to thank Coldbrook for all of their hard work and dedication to our mission," said Leukemia & Lymphoma Society representative Jeanne Watters. "With their help, we have been able to provide financial aid to local families and fund vital research to help patients worldwide." |
"Newcomers" Class to Aid Students
An English as a Second Language for Newcomers class has been approved for incoming high school students who have little or no English language skills or education. The course will offer a quick immersion into the basics of school life and cover language, cultural, academic, social, and study skills. Students will be equipped for greater success in the classroom and will then transition into their ESL course. |
School Groups Now Insured
CASD has been able to secure liability insurance protection for PTOs, PTAs, booster clubs, and other sanctioned groups that use district facilities. This insurance extension was at no cost to the district and helps protect the people who use our buildings. |
