Waller Caldwell

The Reverend W. Waller Caldwell III

July 10, 1963 - October 7, 2011

Pastoral Care Report

The Guild of St. Francis and St. Clare

On October 7, 2011, we lost Waller Caldwell. He was a priest, a leader, and a friend. Through his efforts, the Guild of

St. Francis and St. Clare was transformed and functioned at an extraordinary level. His calls, visits, and communication were exemplary. He personified the role of a "pastor who cared".

Waller's commitment and passion for this ministry enabled the members of the Guild to function at an optimal level.

His communication to the Guild was timely and sensitive. Members were clearly informed about parishioners' needs or concerns. This allowed the members of the Guild to be able to assume their roles with clarity and wise counsel.

Our parish will miss Waller. His persistence and his love touched anyone who met him. Thanks be to God for our having the opportunity to be impacted by his life of service.

God's Blessings,

The Guild of St. Francis and St. Clare

Carillon Class

Ever wonder who is tolling the bells?  If you are over sixteen, can climb steps, have some upper body strength, and read music, it could be you!

If you are interested, please let Carolyn Roberts know (585-7542 or belle.roberts@att.net).  Our first class will meet in the chapel below the bell tower Sunday, November 6 after 11:15 service.  Later classes will be determined by the schedules of the participants.  Usually three or four classes are needed, followed by individual practice. Come see how appealing it can be!

"Man, Women, Wine and Song"

"Man, Women, Wine, and Song" which took place on October 7 was a triumph for the music department. Forty-five people gathered in an intimate setting in the Parish Community Life Center (PCLC) for an evening of dinner and musical entertainment provided by the Advent's professional choir members, along with guest vocalist Anne Denbow. Fr. Hal Carter came by the PCLC to offer prayer and comfort on the passing of Fr. Waller Caldwell. He explained the paradoxes of rejoicing and grieving at the death of a loved one. This night was a night for rejoicing, and the music department hopes that the evening's program was a tribute to Waller, who loved to have a good time with friends and family.

Piedmont Convocation Choral Eucharist

On Wednesday, November 2 at 7:00 p.m. (All Souls' Day) there will be a Solemn Choral Eucharist in commemoration of the faithful departed at  St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 400 DuPre Drive. Choirs from Episcopal churches in Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union counties will unite to render the Requiem by John Rutter in the context of the service. The Rutter Requiem has, since the premiere in 1985, become one of the great standards of the Choral repertoire. The choir will be accompanied by a six-piece instrumental ensemble, including Advent musicians Chris Vaneman, Kelly Vaneman, and Brennan Szafron.

Troop 1 Fowl Fest: a great day for everyone but the chickens!

Mark your calendars for the Troop 1 barbecue on

Saturday, November 19.  Enjoy delicious barbecued chicken (1/2 chicken), beans, slaw, roll, and dessert for $8.50. Scouts will also have gallons of tea available for purchase.   You can pick up your plate anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.  Scouts will be selling tickets between services on October 30 and November 6 and 13.  Please support Troop 1; after all, it has been forming character since 1918 -  right here at the Advent.

Casting Call

All God's children got a place in the cast!  If you are interested in being a part of "Look East, People" during the 11:15 service on December 18, please email Chris at clynn@churchofadvent.org.  There will be 3 rehearsals (required of all cast members):  December 4 and 11 at 10:15 a.m. and Saturday, December 17 from 9:30 - 11:30 am.  All ages are welcomed; most costumes are provided.  Again, anyone and everyone, who can commit to 3 rehearsals and 1 performance, is welcomed!

Pausing on the Road to Bethlehem

That's right - during Lent, we physically walked/ran/swam from Spartanburg to Jerusalem and almost made it back home by Easter!  This year, we are going to make a spiritual journey to Bethlehem during Advent, which begins on November 27.  Look for an email from the church every Monday during the four weeks.  It will contain special prayers, a meditation, the readings for the week, a hint for keeping Advent in your homes, maybe even one of Gail's special recipes.  You can print it out or simply keep it on your computer as a reminder to slow down and breathe, pause and pray.  Rather than ADD to an already too-stressful time of year by expecting more rigorous workouts (although that's not a bad idea), the goal is to provide simple, meaningful ways to stop and wait with Mary, the shepherds, and the angels.  For those who do not have email addresses, the complete packet of flyers will be mailed to your homes.

Advent is coming!

On Sunday, November 27 we begin the Advent season, a season of WAITING for the Incarnation.  To help us keep this holy time, we will offer two opportunities to make Advent wreaths.  That morning during Formation time, there will be no classes for anyone.  Come to the gym in the PCLC to make an Advent wreath for your home.  There will be candle sets (both blue and purple) for sale, wreath forms for sale, cider, music, and greenery.  Bring your clippers and let's enjoy our time together.

For those of you who have been traveling during the Thanksgiving holiday, we will have a special, very casual Holy Eucharist and meal in the PCLC.  Please join us at 5:30 (in your jeans) for a brief, child-friendly, experience of Advent.  Based on the number of participants, we'll order pizza ($3/person) delivered to us so we can share a meal while we make our Advent wreaths that evening.  You can be back at home, fed, and ready for Advent by 7:30 - with a clean kitchen!
