Clergy's Corner

From the Rector

Dear Advent Parishioner,

We are anticipating a great turnout and experience with the upcoming revival at Montgomery Commons!

The inspiration for the revival came from the Holy Spirit after an unsuccessful attempt to work with a respected consultant to improve our approach to stewardship.

He declined our offer, and said we were not ready.  Specifically, the lay and ordained leadership were not ready to implement his proven plan....  He said we needed a stronger foundation!!

Imagine our chagrin! Who was he to admonish us?

After soul searching and prayer, we were led to take his words as inspired by the Holy Spirit and did some serious examination of our lives of faith. Of course, we Adventers are unparalleled in service to community and involvement in every sort of "good works"; however, St. Paul warned against thinking that trying harder would get us into heaven. He taught that faith is primary for Christians.  Thus was born the idea of the Revival: Raise the tent, raise the Faith.  How can we turn the "No" from a consultant into a "Yes" to becoming a more Christ-centered Church?

We hope you will attend the 10:30 a.m. service on October 2.

We also hope you will attend one of the cottage meetings to follow the revival, when we will evaluate our corporate and individual responses to the experience. They will give us a chance to share and discuss our reactions in small group sessions and later to bring the conclusions we reach to the entire congregation in a Sunday church setting.

Raise the tent, raise the Faith! See you there,

Pastoral Care Report

Thank you, Elizabeth Gilliam, for coordinating our Card Ministry for as long as we can remember and a very warm welcome and thank you to Elizabeth's replacement, Holly Watters, who has graciously agreed to lead the Card Ministry for our church. We recruited five men at the Ministries Fair to assist with Long Term and Short Term Care. St. Francis and St. Clare is an equal opportunity ministry, and we welcome all ages and genders. If you are interested in assisting with this ministry, please contact Mary Hope Rhodes or Patsy Simril.

As St. Francis wrote, "O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Cancer Support Group

The Cancer Support Group will meet Wednesday, October 12 at 4:00 p.m. in conference room 1, which is the room diagonally opposite the library in Satterlee Hall. Please join the group if your life has been touched by cancer. For more information, call Jackie Hollis at 573-5177.

Introducing Kelly Vaneman - Angel Choir Director

The Advent is pleased to welcome Kelly Vaneman, the new director of the Angel Choir, who is no stranger to us. Currently a Kelly Vanemanprofessor of oboe and music history at Converse College, Kelly and her husband Chris, also a music professor at Converse, have sung in the Advent Schola since 2008. They have a 7-year old daughter, Tally, who has been a part of the children's choir

program since she was 4. Kelly is a native of San Angelo, TX and holds an undergraduate degree from Baylor University and a graduate music degree from Yale University. She and Chris have lived in Spartanburg since 1996. We're blessed to have such talented musicians in our parish!

We're growing, but we still need you!

It's a pleasure to announce that there are 4 new members of the St. Cecilia (9:00 a.m. adult) choir and 3 new members in the Advent Schola (11:15 a.m. adult choir), but we can still use more singers. Adult Formation Update

It's good to see so many folks in Sunday seminars!  If you're not there, you're both missed and missing out.

After our revival on Sunday, October 2, Dr. A. K. Anderson from Wofford returns to share a little poetry with us.  While much of T. S. Eliot's best-known poetry came before he joined the Anglican Church, he still produced great works following his conversion.  This five-week course will focus on Eliot's post-conversion poetry, especially on his "Four Quartets."  A.K. is always funny, always provocative, and always brilliant - come to dining rooms A and B to see for yourself why he is always a welcomed guest speaker.

Fr. Ned Morris will hold his rector's forum on Sunday, October 9 and 16 this month.  He is using as a point ofdiscussion a series of videos by Rob Bell, author of the controversial book Love Wins.  The lectionary Bible study is always available in Olney Chapel - drop in to learn more about the day's readings.

Blessing of the Animals

In honor of St. Francis and the season of creation celebration (late Pentecost), bring your pets to the lawn besidePendleton Hall on Sunday, October 9 at 5:00 pm for special blessings.  Our fourth and fifth grade class will assist with the service and the Youth Choir will lead us in song.  There will be refreshments for everyone, both animal and human, and offerings of food and/or money will be gratefully accepted for the Animal Shelter.  Please do remember the pet blessing guidelines: dogs must be leashed; cats must be held or caged; large animals must be accompanied by large humans.  In case of rain, the event will be cancelled.

                                                                             Flu Clinic

Our 2011 Flu Clinic is scheduled for Monday, October 10 from 8:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. in dining room C.

The cost is as follows: Flu shot-$25; Preservative freeFlu shot-$30; Flu mist-$45; Pneumonia shot-$75. We will accept checks, cash or credit/debit cards. Medicare will notbe accepted this year.

Please pre-register to ensure they bring the right amount of vaccine. To reserve your spot, contact the church receptionist at 585-2268 or Ann at 504-3690. Please take advantage of this service as we want to continue to offer it each year.

The Advent Children's Center

The Advent Children's Center has successfully started another year. The children are back and much of the crying has stopped! Many of the classrooms have a full enrollment but there are a few openings in some classes. Please encourage those expressing interest to call the office at 585-7143 or email Kathie Borowski at kborowski@churchofadvent.org for more information.

The staff and children would like to thank Mr. Charles Minch for being a guest reader. Mr. Minch came to the preschool on Monday, September 12 and read to the children. He brings some of his wonderful hats to match the stories he reads. The children love it and the staff appreciates his time and support.

The fire truck made its annual visit and supervised the first fire drill on Wednesday, September 14. The firemen dressed out in their gear to alleviate the fear children would experience seeing them for the first time. The children practiced "stop, drop and roll" and talked about having a safe meeting place outside their house in case of a fire.

The teachers are conducting the first of the parent-teacher conferences for the year. It is a nice time for parents to hear about their child's progress. The teachers are also getting ready for the first field trip to the pumpkin patch. The trips are a fun way to experience the changes taking place in the seasons.

Let's make Halloween GREEN!

Halloween is the name given to the eve or vigil of All Saints'

(or All Hallows') Day. Originating with the Celtic tribes, the

festival marked the end of summer and was a time when the bridge separating this world and the next became thinner, allowing spirits to cross over.  The secular popularity of the holiday in the 21st Century has caused it to be less about honoring the saints than commercial sales of costumes and decorations.

Today, almost every child under 12 goes trick or treating on Halloween.  And they love to dress up!  But here's a sobering thought:  if only half the children in America traded costumes instead of buying new ones, it would keep 6,250 TONS of waste out of our landfills.  October 8 is National Costume

Swap Day.  Ask your friends to participate with you, or visit greenhalloween.org/costumeswap to find an in-person or

online swap event.  It could be even more fun than trick or treating - and a good thing for preserving God's creation.

Convocation Relief Trip October 9-15

In the beginning of October, from October 9-15, there will be another opportunity to come and be a part of this work o clean and rebuild a community that has gone through so much in the past months. "I am certain that, like the past two experiences, it will be full of stories of joy and hardship that will help to transform our lives and draw us into deeper relationships with each other and God," said Father Hal Carter.

If you think you might be interested in participating in this ministry, please e-mail Father Hal Carter at  email.

Outreach Sunday-10,000 Meals Assembled

10,000 meals were assembled in 35 minutes for Stop Hunger Now. These meals will be shipped to Haiti to provide nourishment for those in desperate need of these vitamin-and-nutrient-rich meals. During the packing of these meals, 90 thank you parcels for the Spartanburg Fire Department were assembled by the 3 and 4 year olds of the parish as well as other members. The parcels were created in appreciation for the department's service to the community and in remembrance of September 11. Both events were wonderful representations of what we as people of faith are called to do. And if your friends ask, yes, that was The Advent on the Spartanburg CBS nightly news on September 11.

If these events awakened a curiosity to find ways to volunteer and pray through action, please contact Fr. Hal at  email . Again, thank you to everyone who participated in Mission and Outreach Sunday through action and prayer.

SPIHN at the Advent!

Can you imagine being homeless? Can you imagine being homeless along with your children? The Church of the Advent is one of thirteen churches in the county who open their doors four times a year so that homeless families with children can have a safe, welcoming place to stay. To provide this wonderful service, a multitude of volunteers provide time and talents.

The Church of the Advent hosted four families, including 7 children, through the Spartanburg Interfaith Hospitality Network (SPIHN) the week of August 21-28.

The Session Coordinator was Stewart Elliott, who provided wonderful leadership for the week.

The overnight hosts who arrived at 5:30 p.m. each night and stayed with the families until 7:00 a.m. the next morning were: Barbara Adams, Stewart Elliott, Hal Carter, Alice Dorrance, Ekky Foss, Bob Holland, Alec Hopps, Cibby Krell, Hearon McCravy, Rob Pflug, Ashley Reid, Jimmy Shoulders, and Trey Thies.

Additional hospitality associates who helped were: Doris Matthews, Mark Mullen, Jeremy Soto, and Steve Wyman.

Each night dinner is provided by the wonderful cooks of the Advent for the families and the church volunteers. The session food coordinator was Sarah Galloway. The dinner providers were: Alice Dorrance, Wesley and Libba Hammond, Melissa Johnson, Francie Little, Keysie and Joe Maddox, Gail McCullough, and Kari Warren.

Additional support for SPIHN is the setup and breakdown of the rooms for the guests. These necessary volunteers were: Mac and Carol Davis, David and Kay Fudge, Trey Thies, and Steve Wyman.

Flowers were provided for the rooms and common areas headed by Martha Schwartz, Ellen Gould and the Altar Guild.

Last but not least, Ellen Rutter washed all the bed linens and towels used by the guests.

This ministry is a labor of love for all of the above mentioned volunteers. The Advent will host SPIHN again November 27-December 4, 2011. Please contact Charlie Tulloh if you would like to be added to the number of SPIHN volunteers.
