From the Rector
I hope and pray you and yours have been enjoying this summer. I am pleased to say that things at the Advent have been going extremely well.
We have seen more folks in church (due in part to our three-service schedule), the Book and Brown Bag class on Wednesdays has been a hit, and activities for our children and youth have been well attended.
Vacation Bible School, in late June, was successful thanks to the time and talents of Francis Krydynski, Angela Halstead, Chris Lynn, and the many volunteers.
Midsummer Brunch, which was on July 17, will be an annual event. Our kitchen staff (Gail and Jessica Owens), Elizabeth Gilliam, and the Parish Life Commission created a delicious and fun brunch designed for fellowship. Old photographs of parishioners are still in the Parish and Community Life Center.
The Office of Communications has been enhanced thanks to one of our parishioners, Stephen Tulloh. We are pleased to announce that soon we will hire a part-time Facilities and Communications Coordinator. Stephen graciously has offered to help orient the new staff member.
Pastoral Care has been carried out in a more comprehensive manner with the additions of Father Waller and Father Hal. Such has been possible through the collaborative effort of our clergy and lay ministers. Father Waller, Assistant Rector for Pastoral Care and Parish Missioner, has been coordinating and streamlining our records of care and contacts. His work with the Guild of St. Francis and St. Clare has helped ensure members are tended in a variety of ways. Let us join together to offer three cheers and a loud thank you for Father Waller's tireless efforts.
Father Carter has been transitioning wonderfully into his position of Assistant Rector for Outreach and Mission. If you have not had the opportunity to meet him, please do so soon. He has some interesting ideas about ways to increase and deepen our outreach to the community.
Revival Sunday, don't forget, will be October 2. It excites me to plan this event which will strengthen and renew our relationships with Jesus Christ, each other, and the community.
God's peace and blessing during this last full month of summer.

The Guild of St. Francis and St. Clare "That Christ's light be shown in us by our immediate response to the cares and concerns of our parishioners": that is the missionary statement of the Guild of St. Francis and St. Clare. Since the beginning of June, Father Caldwell has recorded more than 190 pastoral care contacts, and that number does not include the contacts made by volunteers in the Guild. The Guild provides love, support and hospitality to parishioners during celebratory and difficult times. It performs such via five ministries: Card, Food and Freezer, Short-Term, Long-Term, and Bereavement. The Card Ministry communicates with parishioners via mail. Cards are sent to celebrate births, to wish recovery, to express sympathy, and to offer support. The Guild functions at its optimum if it is informed of events in people's lives in a timely fashion. It also functions at its best when many volunteers participate. If you want the church to send a card to a parishioner or if you want to participate in the Card Ministry, please contact Elizabeth Gilliam at 585-2268, extension 229. If you have a concern about yourself, a member of your family, or another parishioner, please call Father Caldwell at 585-2268, extension 215, so that the Guild may respond. In addition, please let Father Caldwell know that you want to participate. You will discover that the Guild is an opportunity to practice Christian love. |

Lector Instruction
A lector is someone who, during a service, reads the Bible lessons and leads the congregation in the Prayers of the People. If that interests you, please attend the training sessions on Sunday 31 July and Sunday 14 August from 10:15 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary. Attendance is mandatory for those who want to serve as lectors; those who currently serve as lectors also should attend.
Church Music Conference
Where was Brennan Szafron July 11 - 17? He was at the 61st annual Sewannee Church Music Conference. For a brief history of the conference and some reviews of bygone conferences, click this link. Information about this year's conference may not yet be available.
Summer Choir
The Summer Choir will sing for one more month, through Sunday 4 September, which is Labor Day weekend. If you sing and want to be a member of a low-key group, this choir befits you. The group meets each Sunday morning in the choir room (Pendleton Hall) one hour before the 11:15 a.m. service to rehearse the anthem for that morning. All parishioners are welcome to join; please contact Brennan Szafron at 504-3694 for more information.
Ministries Fair
With three adult choirs, five children's choirs, and two instrumental ensembles, the Advent has many opportunities for you and/or your child to serve the parish musically. Please learn more about the Music Ministry at the annual Ministries Fair on Sunday 28 August. The more parishioners in the ministry, the stronger the ministry will be.
2011 - 2012 Concert Series
The third annual concert series will be different in that not every event will be in the sanctuary. Hence, the title of the series, Music Here and There, conveys the power of music everywhere. Below is a list of the events.
Sunday 11 September at the 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services: "Music in Memory of 9/11" will focus on peace and comfort. The vocal and instrumental selections will be the "Pie Jesus" from John Rutter's Requiem, Ennio Morricone's "Gabriel's Oboe," and Denis Bedard's "Melodia." Instrumentalists Kelly Vaneman (oboe), Ken Frick (trumpet), and Chris Vaneman (Flute) will perform at either service.
Friday 7 October at 7:00 p.m.: "Wine, Women, Man and Song" will comprise dinner and musical entertainment. Join the Advent's paid choral leaders for drinks, dinner, Broadway and opera in the Parish and Community Life Center.
Wednesday 2 November at 7:00 p.m.: a choral Holy Eucharist for the feast of All Souls will be at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church. Experience a commemorative service in which 40 voices liturgically render John Rutter's Requiem to honor the faithful. If you have never heard Rutter's work, let me warn you: it evokes tears.
Sunday 18 December at the 11:15 a.m. service: experience the Advent's second annual Christmas pageant in a context of lessons and carols. All the musical groups at the Advent will be present.
Sunday 29 January at 4:00 p.m.: hear Market Street Brass, a quintet from Greensboro, North Carolina. The professional ensemble will perform everything from Bach to Dixieland.
Sunday 18 March at 4:00 p.m.: The Portland Guitar Duo will perform. The duo uses multiple forms of classical guitars to create beautiful melodies.
Friday 27 April at 7:00 p.m.: the children's choir of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, will sing again at the Advent. St. Peter's hosts a choral school that trains children from ages 8 to 18.
2012 Lenten Recital Series
The title of the 2012 series is Bach, Bread and Blessings. The recitals will be Wednesdays at noon throughout Lent. Brennan will reveal details about the series in another edition of the paper.

Christian Formation Growing in understanding |
Men's Bible Study
The Men's Bible Study, which meets each Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. in conference room 2 (Satterlee Hall), will finish Revelation on August 4. On August 11, the group will discuss the letter of Jude, and on August 18, the group will begin to discuss the first of the three letters of John.
Book and Brown Bag
Who knew there are so many fans of C. S. Lewis in this parish? More than 50 people have been participating in the discussion of Lewis' Mere Christianity on Wednesdays from 12:15 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in dining room A (PCLC). There will be only two more meetings (August 10 and 17).

The series will continue August 24 with a discussion of another work by C. S. Lewis, The Great Divorce, which will be available soon in the Advent Shoppe. Please bring something to eat; Gail and Jessica will provide something to drink. Childcare will be available; however, you must call Chris Lynn (585-9090, extension 222) to arrange such.
Blessing of the Backpacks
Before another school year begins, bring a backpack to the 9:00 a.m. service on August 14 so that Father Morris can bless it.
Safe Church
There will be a Safe Church lesson at the Advent on Sunday 14 August from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in dining room A (PCLC) for those who will be working with our youth as mentors, D-Group leaders, Scout leaders, basketball coaches, and chaperones. The diocese requires the aforementioned to receive training before working with the youth. Chris Lynn also encourages Eucharistic visitors, Vestry members, Bible study leaders, and Adventure Kingdom teachers to attend. The cost is $10.00 per person for the materials. Please call Chris Lynn (585-9090, extension 222) or send her an email to pre-register.
The Word Became Young
The children's chapel will resume at the 9:00 a.m. service on August 21. The Word Became Young is for children in fourth grade or higher. They follow the acolytes out of the sanctuary during the sequence hymn, participate in a short service, and return during the absolution and peace so that everybody can be at the Lord's table. parents who want to serve as role models for the children will need to add their names to a list at the Ministries Fair.
Notes on Nursery
If you used the nursery last year, you should have received a letter that asks for your preferences to serve as a greeter three times this year. Please respond promptly so that Chris Lynn can complete and mail the new schedule by August 10.
Beginning Sunday 7 August, if you sign a child in for nursery care, you must leave an emergency contact number. Remember to switch the sound of your phone to vibrate. The nursery only will contact you if there is an emergency. Many thanks for your cooperation.
Women's Bible Study
Have you ever doubted yourself, fought temptations, battled personal inconsistencies, fallen into sin, suffered losses, or anguished over familial problems? Join the club, or more specifically, David's club. The Women's Bible Study will learn about a Biblical figure of unequaled failure and redemption: King David, the man after God's heart. Beth Moore will teach participants via video what it means to be human and will remind participants that God's devotion to us is not connected to our performance, but to our acceptance of Him.
The eleven-week course (from September 1 through November 10) will take participants from the pasture to the palace and everywhere between. A different member of the class will facilitate the discussion each week. But do not worry: the group comprises women at different stages of Biblical literacy, so any woman at any point in her faithful journey is welcome to participate.
The class will meet each Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the dining rooms (PCLC). To register for the course and to order a workbook ($20.00), please call Chris Lynn at 585-9090, extension 222, or send her an email. The workbook is a necessary component of the course, for it enhances the information in the video. For more information, please contact either Laura Bauknight at 583-1243 or via email or Lynne Blackman at 585-8179 or via email.
Wednesday Night Bible Study
Finding Balance: Loving God with Heart and Soul, Mind and Strength was designed to help women explore the issues of balance--balance between devotion and duty, prayer and service, being and doing. The video is by Becca Stevens, an Episcopal priest currently serving as the chaplain at Vanderbilt University. If you have purchased anything by Thistle Farms in the Advent Shoppe, well, she is the founder of that outreach ministry. She has thrived on the challenges of balancing her work and family, her duty to God and others, and prayer and study.
Helen Mitchell and Janet Davis will facilitate the discussion, which will begin September 7 at 6:00 p.m. in conference room 2 (Satterlee Hall). The group will meet for six weeks. If you want to join, please call Helen at 579-9828 or Janet at 585-3471.
Adult Formation
Kyle Keefer, Caleb Loring, A. K. Anderson, Byron McCane: those are some of the guests who will lead the adult forums this fall. They will speak about hell, teenagers, archeological digs, and other topics. Information about the forums will be available at the Ministries Fair on Sunday 28 August.
Education for Ministry (EFM)
Regina Fargis will serve as the mentor for those who want to deepen their understanding of Christianity. The School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, sponsors the program. More information about the program, which requires a nine-month commitment, will be available at the Ministries Fair on Sunday 28 August.

Thursday 25 August: d-groups meet from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. *Learn about the Youth MinistryParents of sixth graders, the ministry wants to meet and to tell you about the many spiritual and enjoyable activities the Advent offers youth and parents. The ministry hopes to see you at Jason and Teah Pye's home (5 Cateswood Drive) on Sunday 21 August from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. **Youth ConfirmationThe Youth Ministry wants each confirmand to learn more about what it means to be Christian and what it means to have a relationship with Christ. To learn such, confirmands need to participate in presentations, study scripture, contribute to discussions, think seriously about Christ and Christianity, establish relationships with mentors, pray regularly, and engage in fellowship. It is the Youth Ministry's responsibility to prepare adequately the confirmands so that they are ready to publicly affirm, on 22 May 2012, their faith and commitment to their baptismal responsibilities. The first class for confimands will be Wednesday 7 September from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Parish and Community Life Center. The class will begin with a meal and end with a prayer. Some classes will be off the campus. Sunday Nights Every Sunday evening, beginning Sunday 11 September, the youth will meet. The location will change--the church, a parishioner's home, a bowling or climbing center--but youths always will come together. The first Sundays of each month are Jr. and Sr. High gatherings; the second Sundays are discipleship groups (d-groups); the third Sundays are outings; the fourth Sundays are d-groups. With respect to the latter, Iman divides the youth into small groups so that the youths develop, through spiritual and enjoyable activities, a sense of closeness among one another. The d-groups will meet Thursday 25 September from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Support a Student
Each year the Advent provides students and teachers at Mary H. Wright with the tools they need to succeed. This year the Advent is also donating backpacks to the Children at Risk Center. A supply bag is $15.00, and a backpack is $10.00, but Bill Hunter and the volunteers at the Advent Shoppe will accept any amount.

Commemoration of September 11, 2001 in Gaffney
The Reverend Lyndon F. Harris interpreted it as a sign: not one window had broken during the collapse of the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, and the chapel had been across the street from the towers. God had spared St. Paul's Episcopal Chapel for a reason. After the dust had settled, Father Harris managed St. Paul's missionary efforts, transforming the Episcopal chapel into an interfaith oasis for rescue workers. For eight and one-half months, the chapel served as a refuge--a source of help, relief and comfort. How did he do it? Hear Father Harris' experiences Thursday 25 August at 7:00 p.m. in Gaffney Senior High School's auditorium. His presentation--"The Little Church that Stood: A True Story of Extraordinary Courage, Resilience, and Love"--will start Gaffney's three-week commemoration of September 11, 2001. The Cherokee County History and Arts Museum will host, from August 26 through September 17, Eyewitnesses to 9/11: From Tragedy to Transformation. The exhibit will feature artifacts and accounts of the events that day; Jessica Stammen's "WTC Memorial Chalice," a bronze sculpture; Krystyna Sanderson's "Profiles in Courage," a series of portraits; and the acclaimed Courage Banner.
Food Basket Ministry
Please participate in the Food Basket Ministry by donating non-perishable foodstuff to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. There are bins in Satterlee Hall and in the Parish and Community Life Center.
Outreach Sunday
The Outreach Commission, in partnership with Stop Hunger Now, is planning a hunger-relief event in the gymnasium on Sunday 11 September from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The commission needs a minimum of 100 parishioners to package 10,000 meals in an hour. Families, friends and neighbors are more than welcome to participate.

Midsummer Brunch (Sunday 17 July)

In Stitches
There will be some unique items for sale this year at the Advent's annual bazaar. Barbara Gutierrez bought a bale of secondhand kimonos years ago to use in quilting. Because she still had over a hundred left over, she decided to share them with In Stitches. Some of the kimonos are suitable for robes or cover-ups and will be sold as such. The group is disassembling the other kimonos and transforming them into evening bags, pillow shams, and card cases.

If you sew and want to be part of the project, please join the group in the art room on Wednesday 3 August from 4:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Knitters, crocheters, embroiderers and needlepointers are also welcome.

The Cancer Support Group will meet Wednesday 10 August at 4:00 p.m. in conference room 1, which is the room diagonally opposite the library in Satterlee Hall. Please join the group if your life has been touched by cancer. Call Jackie Hollis at 573-5177 for more information.
Fellowship Groups
If you are Sorta Young--that is, 30 to 50 years young--you may want to bring an appetizer and a beverage to Megan and Russ Rudolph's home (134 Burnett Drive) Friday 19 August at 7:00 p.m. But you need to let them know you will be there, so warn them at 585-2917 or via an email. Singles and couples who meet the aforementioned criterion meet bimonthly in a parishioner's home.
Fellowship Group I meets at 6:30 p.m. on the third Sunday of every month. Hosts ask guests to bring covered dishes and their favorite beverages. Singles and couples, young and old: the group does not discriminate.
The group will meet Sunday 21 August at 6:30 p.m. in David and Debbie Bowdish's home (421 Mustang Drive). Please call them at 579-2037 or send them an email to let them know you will be there.
If you were born between 1946 and 1965, you may want to join Baby Boomers, which meets bimonthly in a parishioner's home. On Friday 26 August, Larry and Ann Moore will host the group at 202 Coburn Drive at 6:30 p.m. But they need to know you will be there, so call them at 583-9117 or send them an email. Please bring a covered dish and your favorite beverage.
Ministries Fair and Brunch
There are many opportunities for parishioners to exercise their faith at the Advent and in the community through a sponsored ministry. Representative from Pastoral Care, Liturgy, Music, Christian Formation, Youth, Outreach, Parish Life, and Parish Management will be present at the Ministries Fair on Sunday 28 August from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the gymnasium. The representatives will provide information, and Gail and Jessica will provide brunch, which will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the dining rooms. If you want to eat, please contact Elizabeth Gilliam at 504-3683 or via email.
Donations to the Bazaar
This is the third, and probably not the last, time I will ask you to clean your house! Not only will doing such rid you of dust, dirt, and dead bugs, you may discover some treasures to donate to the Love Gift booth for the annual bazaar. And while you are in the attic ... if you find any Christmas decorations you no longer want, please consider donating them. Actually the only items the Love Gift booth will not accept is the Santa suit--that is, clothing. Please call Julie Schwartz at 504-8776 or send her an email if you have any questions or donations.
Oyster Roast
The annual oyster roast will be Friday 28 October. It will begin at 6:30 p.m., and the proceeds will help maintain the Outreach Ministry.

Parish Management Supporting the Advent's ministries |
Reminder
Many of you are looking forward to vacations, summer camps, and other activities that may require your periodic absence from services on Sundays. But remember that the work of the Church of the Advent will continue throughout the summer, and that work requires financial support, support to pay for outreach programs and operational expenses.
To help the church avoid a seasonal loan and the resultant interest expense, please maintain your pledge during your absence, either by mail or via an advancement.
Parish management greatly appreciates your prayerful consideration.
