Village Wins Public Policy Forum Award
The nonpartisan Public Policy Forum, which focuses its policy research on a broad range of issues affecting southeastern Wisconsin, the state and the nation, recently announced that the Village of Bayside will be awarded the 2011 Innovative Response to Tough Budget Times Award for the Village's Green Practices, Sensible Solutions Initiative.
The Green Practices program focused a series of "green" initiatives to enhance energy efficiency, promote environmental stewardship in the community, and provide leadership in enhancing environmental friendliness. While accomplishing each of those goals, the initiatives also produced substantial savings for taxpayers and helped the Village weather the impacts of the economic downturn.
The Village's two primary areas of focus were the Village facility energy consumption reduction initiative, which helped produce an annual average reduction of 33% in energy costs during the past three years. The second primary initiative and collection services efficiency enhancement initiative, which produced an estimated savings of nearly $97,000 in 2010. The Village also increased its recycling by 43 percent, or 180 tons during the first year of the new automated collections system.
The Village will be presented with the award at the Public Policy Forum's annual Salute to Local Government on Thursday, June 23. The Public Policy Forum press release and the Village's award application are available on the Village's website.
