Union Pacific Begins Installation of Railroad Safety Gates

Last week, representatives from Union Pacific, under directive from the Federal Railroad Administration and the Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Railroads began the installation of crossing gates at the railroad crossing on Regent Road.  The gates will improve vehicle and pedestrian safety at the railroad crossing.  Though installation of the gates was not expected to be completed until the end of 2011, work began on Friday, January 21, 2011 and is now expected to be complete by the end of February.  Installation of gates on Fairy Chasm Road will begin the latter of February.

The installation of crossing gates comes after years of negotiations between Village and State and Federal agencies.  The installation is one step towards the Village obtaining a quiet zone designation from Federal Railroad Administration. A quiet zone is a designation of one or more consecutive public intersections in which a locomotive horn may not be sounded.  Bayside's proposed quiet zone includes both Fairy Chasm Road and Regent Road.  As the gates are installed, the Village continues to work with the appropriate parties to apply for the quiet zone designation.
