October 18, 2010 - Over five hundred enthusiastic attendees filled the
conference center at the
River Rock Casino Resort Hotel
this week end for the
Vancouver launch of Calvin Helin's new book is pleased
The Economic Dependency Trap: Breaking Free to Self-Reliance.
The
event featured a keynote address from the author on what the economic dependency
trap was and how individuals and governments caught in it could find their way
to an empowerment mindset. Guests in attendance represented an international audience from New Zealand,
United States, and special delegation
from China .
Some special guests included the author's literary agent Joe Veltre (who flew in from New York), Te Taru White a Maori leader from New Zealand, MLA from the Northwest Territories David Krutko, Chief Willard Cook from the Semiahmoo First Nation, Chief Gibby Jacob of the Squamish First Nation,Grand Chief Morris Shanacappo who represent 34 First Nation of the Manitoba Southern Chief’s Organization Inc. Darrell Beaulieu, CEO of the Denendeh Investments Corporation (an organization representing the business investments of the 27 First Nations of the Northwest Territories) Dave Tuccaro of Tuccaro Inc. and Michael Adams, a writer and public opinion researcher who co-founded and is now President of the Environics Research Group.
A very special delegation led by Delbert and Laura Horton from the Seven Generations Education Institute of Fort Frances Ontario. Delbert Horton explained that the Seven Generations Education Institute is a educational institution that has had huge success in its twenty-five year history in providing educational instruction at the secondary, post-secondary and vocational level. Mr. Horton signed a ground breaking Protocol Agreement with author Mr. Helin to work together to introduce his self-reliance message into the administration and curriculum of this leading institution of higher learning.
Guests also heard a stirring speech from the book editor Peter C. Newman, a Canadian literary icon and journalistic giant. After his presentation, John Helin and Pat Helin, brother to the author, presented Mr. Newman with a special raven-designed paddle carved by Pat Helin. A eagle-designed paddle was also presented to Cree elder Bill Joe Takaro.
Participants at the event will have the pleasure of a concert by the hot band Bitterly Divine, a Vancouver-based, new generation rock band. Attendees were also be treated to beautiful voice of nine-year old Ta'Kaiya Blaney who opened the formal program to a transfixed audience with a rendition of "Amazing Grace" sung in her Sliammon language. The dynamic mystery performer whose vocal charms reigned down on an audience of swooning women was revealed to be no other than the inimitable Morris Shannacappo.
